Is the What Hi-Fi? magazine review of the Aego M speakers online?

I know What Hi-fi gave them 5 stars but you have to take that with a pinch of salt. Every score takes into account how much something costs, so it doesn't mean they necessarily sound as good as 5 star £200 hi-fi speakers. They'll also be reviewing them within the context of them being PC speakers too.

I've seen a couple of quotes here over the last few months from people who own the Aego M and found them lacking compared to hi-fi. That's fair enough though given the price.

That's what I'm concerned about - that they're good compared to these 5.1 "gaming" PC speakers (which tend to be very mediocre for music) but they're some way off hi-fi speakers on a decent seperates system.

I get a more precise mutli-layer sound from my MP3 player / enclosed earphones than I do from the likes of the Creative and Logitech speakers that I've tried.

I don't know since I've never used them. Hopefully though the authors of those comments I mentioned will drop in and offer their thoughts. I'll see if I can find them with a search (the comments).

What Hi-fi do tend to rate everything 5 stars though, and it's not exactly an accurate scoring system. I'm sure the Aego M will be as good as anything that goes under the name 'PC speakers' though.

It is possible to go the hi-fi route for your PC. My setup is Eltax Monitor 3 bookshelfs + Sonic Impact t-amp, which would be about £110 total (including adaptor for the t-amp), maybe cheaper if you shop around. While it's not quite as good as my hi-fi (as it shouldn't be at 1/8th the cost), it's not far off either and gives a very satisfying sound for music/games on my PC.

What have we learned here today?

Hi-fi >*

If you keep the sub unit central and position the sattelites well, these actually sound rather good.

Nowhere near hifi-quality of course, but for the money, ease of setup etc etc I cant see how anything could rival them new.

I was very impressed when I heard them for the first time.
