Is the word chav offensive?

Owen Jones seems to think so...

But then seeing as he stumbled on the idea at a 'dinner party' would suggest he's one of the typical people that doesn't actually have to deal with them on a daily basis.

Probaly yeah

If one sees themsleves as this term

Weirdly, they usually don't.

Someone knocked on our house once. I didn't answer, my housemate did. Apparently the guy had left his bike in next door's garden and wondered if he could jump over ours and get the bike. My housemate said no and he replied 'do I look dodgy or chavy?'. From my housemate's description, he seemed very chavy :p.

There's also a youtube video of Tulisa responding to a viewer's question 'Are you still a chav?'. She seems to think it means you are from London and cockney . She explains that and says yes she must be.

CHAV = "council housed and violent" so i guess your upmarket chavs might be a bit disgusted at the thought of being a council houser?

That or if you're from/near cheltenham then it stands for "cheltenham average" in which case i see no need for them to be offended.

It's more about the way you say it anyway, say it with venom and disgust, that normally puts your point across to them. :)

That guy is irritating and a well known 'champagne socialist'. So no he doesn't deal with them.

I think a rich chav may be worse than a poor chav.

If you don't want to be called a chav, don't act like an ass, wear clothes like an ass, never clean like an ass, smoke and drink loads like an ass.

Etc.

Just don't do it.

This was just posted on reddit, fitting :p

Should definitely be renamed from 'Japfest' seeing as many Japanese fund the term jap offensive.

I don't see anything wrong with Jap, not any more anyway, i just see it as shorthand.

But i suppose people never change their ideas of the English language, which is mildly annoying, when its the whole point.

Chav is intended to be a derogatory reference so by default it is offensive.

The question is does anyone actually care about offending that group or not, nobody cares about offending gippos or kiddy fiddlers are they are universally disliked (unless Bono is in today)

Which was 70 years ago, anyone having a grudge for 70 years is either dead or old and understandable.

Anyone younger however and it simply breaks down, into an artificial "woe is me" effect.

I'm not saying whether or not they're justified in being offended. The N word was created ages ago as a derogatory term, just like jap. Pretty sure black people would still get offended now.

Well of course they would, it still is the matter of the perceiver, if they are overly sensitive about something that they had nothing to do with, then they are at fault.

I am not saying the person slinging slurs is not at fault either, but i suppose it depends on the tone and other associated things.
