Is there a best 1156 processor or doesn’t it matter now?

Just picked up a mini itx system for £20.

Cube case
Gigabyte ga-h55n-usb3
1gb ram
Cit 300w SFX
Optical

Don’t know what processor it has till I can fire it up tomorrow, but it has start up/shut down issues which is why they sold it, hopefully just a cpu paste thing.

Anyways depending if I can get it working and what processor this thing has despite it being a cube, so takes up more space, I am thinking of replacing my Lenovo with it as it’s custom, so can do what I like with it really other than twin slot graphic cards, but as it’s older so processors are cheaper, is there any particularly one to get or doesn’t it matter with its age? Not to mention I’ve seen these Lenovo’s for like £70 plus so that be a good fund for my other systems.

I’m still keeping my other cube with the 1155 setup as that has my better full atx psu and can take more options on the gpu front, but I will try have some fun with this itx, but will be my main for hardly anything game related.

Thanks for reply.

I have seen i7 processors for under £60, but at those times I wasn’t looking so they be gone, but I have no clue about how Xeon processors work as I always thought they were server chips? Whatever I get if need to will run under the stock cooler should I not break this one ha.

thanks for reply.

yeah ive seen bargain priced 1366 i7 processors, but never a computer or a cheap motherboard to go with them, typical really eh.

yeah im aware of there being dual core and quad i5's, i actually had a laptop with a 2c/4t i5 430m coupled with 8gb ram, 5470 gpu and ran wow back in its day maxxed out perfectly as well as cod games etc, but other than they having turbo, id rather just get an i3 again if i wanted dual core, but i have seen i think a quad 750(maybe s) for £20 which im keeping my eye on as im away this weekend, i suspect it to be on par if not a little better? than my 4150 which is the level i want to be at for my main system outside of a cheap i7 that is.

as for the power supply, once i get back home, i will try my fsp 300w bronze i kept to see if it works, while i have had no issues with Cit units, those computers never lasted long as they were for resale(psu bundled with case), wouldnt use one myself outside of quick testing, but so far only the 300w square silverstones ive seen as the cheapest at a bit over £40, dont really know what to look for in terms of SFX, ideally modular, but they expensive and i can pretty much only run single slot cards, so no point spending too much, will likely get the 1030 for this build as i suspect the only single slot 1050 not to be cheap ha.

bit of an update, the system doesnt start long enough before shutting down so just took the cooler off, the paste is very dry and lacking, so hopefully that will be the cause, anyways the processor in this is actually an i3 540, so better than what i was expecting which making me think whether the i5 chips would be actually worth it even at £20 for a 750 just to have the turbo.

update: new paste didnt do anything and these stock coolers are a pain to put back on, after a few seconds it shuts off, i have noticed a green, yellow, red light are on all the times i press the power button, but i have no idea what these means, but im hoping a different power supply and/or ram will resolve things and ive not just purchased a paper weight motherboard
