Than the Canon S70 ? Seriously?

I've looked and looked, Sony camera seems to built like Fisher Price toys, picked one up and it feels like its just a shell with candy floss inside. Lots of Point and shoot at this price don't have manual controls or abysmal movie modes, i've checked out the A520 from Canon, its nice lik emy A60, but it's only about £50 difference to the S70 and from what i've read, the S70 is vastly superior, make the £50 worth spending.

p.s. i've never like Pentax or Nikon (consumer models - the S2 looks like a disapointment waiting to happen with no Av/Tv modes).

Am I missing something here or the S2 is as good as it gets for £230?

Don't have a clue Raymond but I'm waiting for somebody to reply along the lines of " you could get a 2nd hand 300D from an auction site etc " :D

Seems as if I post about this camera every week at the moment...but...Fuji S5600?

Have you looked at the panasonic FZ5? looks alright and is on sale for around your price bracket :)

I've opted for the Canon S70 now (and got a 1G CF card from morgan, all should be here tomorrow), used a few Fuji before and they have the tendency to give out a green cast over the photos, and the S5600 is a little too pocket unfriendly.

Yes you can get a better camera, but its not digital :)

I already got a Canon EOS30 with a couple of lenses, and a Canon A60. The S70 is to tide me over til the replacement of the 20D comes out when i'll get one in the summer for my friends' weddings.

Same. Although I would agree that these cameras are not pocket friendly.

The S60 actually performs better than the S70, although the latter is better specced that the former. Guess it all depends on what you want out of your new toy and if the S60 is that much cheaper than the 70 - providing you can find one that is!

Now you tell me :p

anyway, I haven't be able to find one, nor seen one on any sites I've come across. I was tempted to get the S80 even, Digi 2, bigger Screen but S70 is £100 cheaper and still vastly superior to my old A60 so I am happy.

the Powershot a620 is i think a bit better :)

avaible for around 220 fromsome places there is a DPreview

Fuji F11 (slightly over budget - can be got online for £230 but with no memory card). The F10 is nearly as good, but does not have Av and Tv modes. Great little cameras from what I have read. I have an F11 on my list as a backup to my D70. :)

I actually prefer the older Canon S30/40/45 to the new S60/70/80 etc..

The recent S series cams don't have the same build quality as the older S cameras which feel as though they were made from a solid block of metal.

I think the S70 is built like a solid block of metal, the S80 on the other hand is plastic, you can see from the picture and they've taken away the RAW features to make way for SVGA movie mode. Which is a real shame.

You really need to hold them side-by-side to appreciate the difference. The S30/45 etc weighs 100g more than the S60/70 and feels much more solid.

well, the S70 has metal front, and back, only plastic part is the dial (they all are), the battery compartment (they all are) and the buttons. It feels chunky and solid in hand, but now do wonder how solid the S30/45 are.

i have the S60 - been using it for about 9 months and paid about £260

couldnt ask for a better DP&S, the results are exceptional so im assuming the s70 will be similar but with a bigger MP (7 is it?)

Like a metal block that someone has managed to shoehorn a camera into!

That's my impression of the S70, just oooooozes quality, even the zoom button is metal. Love the thought that went into it, the slide on the front, even the metal bit where the strap goes into.
