As title I'm thinking of getting hold of a new tablet to replace my ageing LG G-Pad and the Nexus 9 seems to fit the bill!

I've seen the new Nvidia Shield K1 tab but the 7" screen is putting me off a little as I'm used to the 8.3" screen on my LG slate!

Are there any other tablets out there that I should be considering?

The only thing that's putting me off a little is the 4:3 aspect ratio as I tend to use my tablet to watch videos more than anything else!

Can someone explain to me the current range from Samsung?? There just seems to be an endless list of tablets - "S" and non-S models and then the S2 models in varying sizes?!?!? Which are the best to be looking at these days??

Thanks! I was getting a bit confused between the tab, tab 2, tab s2, tab a, tab e etc etc etc....

I'm assuming at north of £300 (or nearer £400 in the case of the 9.7" model) these aren't that much better than the sub-£200 Nexus 9??

I've always liked the Sony range but the Z4 is too pricey and even the Z3 is well over the competition from the looks of things!

Just a heads up, the nVidia shield has an 8" screen not 7" as stated in the OP.

Yeah just noticed that! I was sure I'd read it was a 7" screen somewhere!!

Usage-wise it tends to be used for streaming video content from my NAS via Plex and general internet browsing - not much of a tablet gamer to be honest as I've got my PC and PS4 for that!

Hmmm, torn between the following

  • Nvidia Shield K1 @ circa £150
  • Nexus 9 @ circa £190
  • Galaxy Tab S2 (8") @ circa £300 (or lower depending on the mythical Black Friday deals :p)

A micro SD card slot would be an advantage but not a deal-breaker as I tend to stream straight from the NAS!

Hmmmm, just had a look at the Galaxy S2 tabs - I have to say they are very nice pieces of kit!!

So light compared to what I was expecting and the screens are pin-sharp and really vivid!

Shame I couldn't compare the three though because they didn't have the Nexus 9 or Nvidia tabs there! :(

I'd say it largely depends on whether you prefer the 4:3 or 16:10 aspect ratio - from what I gather the Nexus is the better for general internet browsing but the Shield better suited to watching videos etc.

I did see a benchmark that suggests the Nexus is by far the faster device but then some reviews seem to suggest that this benchmark is largely dependent upon the same tasks being done over and over rather than it being a "real-world" environment like opening multiple app's etc.

I have to say I'm having the same problem - just not sure which one is best to go for! (mind you, as you say there doesn't seem to be many Nexus devices around at a reasonable price so that might make the decision for me!)

Reserved one of the 9.7" S2's at £299 but will still see if there are any better deals tomorrow!

The reviews on the S2 aren't that spectacular though - the Expert Reviews one compares it to the Air 2 and the Nexus 9 and in terms of benchmarks it doesn't fare overly well!?!?!

Seemed smooth as silk when I had a quick mess about with one in the shop the other day!

Yeah, I'm very tempted for the 9.7" S2 - felt amazingly light in the store!

As stated in my OP though, 70% of the use will be streaming media from my NAS and so I'm not entirely convinced with the 4:3 aspect ratio! (and on the other hand I don't think I want to go for the 8" version because it's not enough of an "upgrade" from my LG G-Pad 8.3" tab!)

Quite tempted though as £299 - especially with 10% Quidco cashback on offer too! (does anyone know if you have to purchase online to qualify for Quidco or can I still reserve online and collect in store and still get the cashback??)

If you can handle having your eyeballs scraped everytime touchwiz pops up of course.

It does tickle me when people moan about the stock launcher/skin for each manufacturer being "unbearable" in one way or another - for me, the best thing about Android is that you can literally change the look of the phone/tablet to what ever you want with the dozens of free launchers out there!

I rarely stick with the device's own launcher!

Really leaning towards the 9.7" S2 tab - it looks the business in the shop!

Does anyone know how it outputs a video signal? (Assuming it does!)

Fair enough but other that slowing down the progression to the next OS, what major difference does the underlying UI make other than visuals? (Serious question - I can't think of much that bothers me, even if I hate the default skin!)
