Is there a Intel CPU that can do 5.0GHz on air ?

Its a lottery, there are CPUs that might but you have to pay your money and take your chance.

Even if you get one that can, for 24/7 use its not practicle.

Thanks for the replies guys ;)

I haven't upgraded my PC for a while now and was a bit out of touch with the latest CPU's. I was thinking 5.0GHz would be easy these days :o

I guess I'll be sticking with my 4.0GHz setup a bit longer :(

My 2500k can do 5Ghz on high end water. But just not practical as it was stupidly load and needed a massive case to house 2x 360 rads.

For the extra 400~500 MHz compared to silent air I have now. It's just not worth the hassle.

So in short, no :)

I have an i7 3820 which has hit 5ghz on air ^.^

Runs HOT though... into the 80'c under load... that's with a pair of 200cfm delta fans in push/pull :p

Underwater 5ghz is easily reachable for most (all?) 3820's though!

Do you think a Intel Core i7-3970X 3.50GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor would be a good upgrade choice ?

Future proof ?

No

If you want a hex core go for an i7 3930k which can be had for just over half the price of an i7 3970x. When both CPUs are overclocked the performance is almost exactly the same.

So would you say the i7 3930k is the fastest/best Intel CPU to go for ?

With intels Hex core CPUs i7 3930k, 3960x, and 3970x out of the box they run at slightly different speeds but when overclocked they all have the same sort of performance. If you put say a 3930k (the cheapest of the three) in a quality mobo like the RIVE it will probably perform better than the 3970x (the most expensive) in a cheap mobo.

Its always a bit of a silicon lottery as to how well CPUs perform but even taking that into account the three CPUs will be within a few % of each other when oced and sometimes its the 3930k that comes out on top for performance.

The big difference is the 3930k can be had for around £455 and the 3960/70x for just under £800

Hers my post from 13th January 2012…

This motherboard is just sooooo, ridiculously, insanely, good, I achieved this benchmark at 5.1 GHz on AIR how can this be possible?

Since then I have been running my [email protected] for a quiet life. But on occasions I do benchmark at 5.2Ghz on air. Noctua’s are such bad boys,
