Is there a need for performance cars on the road?

Power is ease of acceleration; overtaking, joining motorways, driving up steep slopes, powering up to speed out of tight bends, getting a quick get away from the lights - all very useful and practical advantages that high power brings. The higher the power, the easier it is.

My 535d is not particularly powerful, but the accessibility of a decent amount of power makes driving with some pace nothing more than a slight twitch of the foot at any RPM. With 200 HP at 2000 RPM, 250 HP at 2500 RPM etc. you can drive around at sensible speeds without ever feeling like you're actually having to accelerate. The typical 40-60 and 30-50 type accelerations are dispatched in moments.

I would happily take any amount of power up to what can be utilised on a particular car. The idea of 600 HP or more and a ton of torque is very appealing.
