Is there a problem with the MSI X870 Tomahawk?

I'm seeing an unusually high number of problems with this board compared to others everywhere I look. I know it comes with a completely new BIOS so it could be that.

I'm planning to build a PC with a 9800x3d and Corsair Vengeance 6000Mhz CL30 but there's a big thread on the MSI forums about this specific combination. Is anyone running these parts that isn't having a problem?

There definitely seems to be in my hands! I’ve built many PCs in my time but never experienced this level of problems before.

Setup:
9800x3d
Arctic freezer 3 320mm
MSI x870 tomahawk

CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 AMD EXPO Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory – Grey (CMH32GX5M2B6000Z30K)

Samsung 990 pro
Rtx 970 (old card but confirmed working on another machine)
NZXT C1200W

Fired up last night, all fans spinning, took forever for the monitor to come up with the boot screen. Only works plugged into the mboard hdmi connector.

My issue is, even with EXPO disabled, one ram stick taken out I can’t get it to POST repeatedly. Managed to install windows, it installed some updates and since then I get the rotating wheel on the boot screen and it stops (crashes). I usually have to clear the CMOS just to be able to get into boot setup.

Worth tweaking the DRAM voltage up a bit? Not sure what is standard. I’ve ordered some patriot viper 7400mhz ram today so will try that later when it arrives.

Any other ideas anyone..I am convinced it’s a mboard/cpu compatibility issue!

Might be an AGESA v AMD issue - there are a few people having issues with their AM5 motherboard doing weird things and not being happy with RAM or settings or anything.

Update BIOS and do a Reddit search for your motherboard to see if anyone has any solutions.

AM4 boards famously had problems with AGESA versions fighting with the BIOS.

Thanks will give that a go. Forgot to add managed to update the BIOS (latest version) this morning forcing the M-flash utility using the board switch at the back, still same issue.

AGESA ComboAM5 1.2.0.2b still no further with it.

Plan is to remove the nvidia 970, probably remove the M2 as well and see where we are with minimal things connected.

Just an update…removed the 970 and everything is working perfectly. Also might have not noticed the pwr_pci-e connector on the mboard ‍:(

Installed windows, chipset drivers, nvidia drivers (with the 970 in) and now I can’t get into the bios and windows crashes before boot up.

Decided to remove the 970, will swap it out for the 980ti…something very strange going on with the auto selection of graphics card on this board. Glad to report the memory seems to work perfectly with EXPO1 selected with integrated graphics
