Well, is there?! I usually have it on either never turn off because it annoys me or when I genuinely want it to turn off I have to go to the power settings option and set it to turn off in one minute. What I ideally want is a keyboard shortcut to do it. I don't want it to go into standby. I'm running OSX on a MacBook in case it helps.

i think you can just do it by dimming the brightness right down using the F1 key. Not sure if it goes completely off or not but it appears to be anyways! I could be wrong. Only had my Mac for a few days.

It doesn't go off completely, just backlight goes out.

I have been learning Cocoa the mac os x programming lanuguage so I will have a look over the next couple of days and see if i can write an app which tell the screen to sleep but not the computer, no promises as I am very new to this, however I will do my best, if I dont reply then theres been no luck

Although saving the backlight is good I want it to turn off the monitor when it's not being used too to prolong its life.

TBH, 1 min of it being on will make sod all difference to the battery life, set it to the lowest OSX will allow and leave it.

What monitor do you have?! I have a Apple Cinema Display and if you go into the settings you can either set the on/off button to turn on and off the whole machine or just the monitor.

I have it set to turn the monitor on and off - whole machine still stays on running in the background!

I did have a look but the framework only allows you to see if the screen is asleep not make it go to sleep so I am sorry no luck. best to keep changing the eco settings. or you could use an app called backdrop in combination with turning off the backlight
