every time i reinstall windows the first thing i do when finished is install tweak ui and use it to tell xp that my documents, my pictures, etc, are not on the same physical drive as windows, but on another drive.

when the vista issues start to get fixed i will be upgrading, but i am wondering how i can change folder locations in vista. tweak ui is not compatible and i will need something to do the same thing.

or can it be done easily with the os itself. by the way i know i could probably do this with registry tweaks, but i like to leave the registry alone as much as possible.

i didn't know that location option was there in xp and it is good to know i can do this in vista too. thanks for your help.

another question that your reply brings to mind.

I have had vista installed before (trial versions), and i could not sort out where the documents folder really lives. and when i tried to access the folders locations that looked like contenders (i think there were 2 places) i couldn't access either of them. even when i changed folder permissions access was denied, although when i clicked documents in start menu or desktop there was no problem. what is going on there?????

when i installed vista it was a dual boot. stuck it on its own partition so it was a clean install really, so i'm not sure what caused me to not be able to access the folders.

but anyway, what i am thinking to myself is that i might put my extra hdd into my machine and install vista on that for another look - with my 2 xp hdd's disconnected. when i want to test vista i'll disconnect the xp hdd's. cos dual booting vista, going by my previous experiences, is very bad for xp.
