Is there a way to retrieve the serial for a laptop?

I've decided to reformat my daughters laptop with an original copy of Vista Home Premium but about 4 of the numbers are illegible on the label stuck to the laptop before I start.
Is there a piece of software that can retrieve it?

try speccy should give you the product key currently activated

HOWEVER, the number on the label looks nothing like the one on Speccy

For instance the first five digits on the label are: PP6FB but the first five on Speccy are: 6DG3Y

Stupid fool, I forgot about:

Press F9 on boot > Press F8 for Repair > Press Recover HD to the day you had it.
