Is there a way to turn my gfx card fan off?

I'm trying to pin down an irritating noise from one of my fans somewhere in my case. Its more of a motor grumbling noise than an airy fan noise. By default the fans on my Asus 7970 Direct CUII Top are 10% when the card is idle. I'd like to be able to turn them off completely to see if thats where the noise is coming from.

Cheers.

I'd personally be wary blocking running fans. Instead I'd just pull the graphics card out and use onboard.

or remove each other fan one at a time, boot up etc etc untill you find the dodgy fan :)

or you could 'unplug' the fan from the PCB and give it a quick try ?

If it's a buzzing it's normally GPU fans. It's not difficult to remove the washers and oil the bearings but if it's under warranty just send it back.

I wouldn't advise blocking the fan either TBH. I'm pretty sure it plays tricks with the voltage (9 times out of ten you'll be fine though honestly)

I use the finger method. Stick a finger on the central hub and stop it for a few seconds. You will definitly know then.

Works everytime.

Although sometimes I nearly lose my finger it never damages the fan.

Just to be safe i removed the card and used onboard video for bit. To my ears the sound had definitely gone. Upon re-installing the card is clear that the cause of the noise was the gfx card fans.

I dont know if i'm just overly sensitive to noise or if the card has slight fault. The reason i bought this specific card was because the reviews and other forum member comments lead me to believe it was basically silent at idle and only slightly audible under load.

I dont want to RMA the card only for OCUK to tell me thats just how they sound and there's nowt wrong with it.

Fans shouldnt be making any grumbly/grinding noises. I would RMA it, OCUK Customer Service is really good and the worst (and unlikely imo), is you will end up with your card back. If the fan isnt spinning properly, its only going to get worse until something goes wrong...

This - don't do it for too long as it'll knacker the bearings.

it works for CPU fans and most case fans too. Slight bit of pressure dead centre.
