...stop see who is using your router within the household, and block them from using the internet? I was wondering if there was software that was capable of this? I have looked on my routers Settings through the IP address, but can't find anything that looks like it will work

Its a Netgear

Thanks

EDIT: My question a bit further down is more important than this one, if you know the answer :)

Also while Im hear, I have a question about my speed. From this picture:

http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/9623/routersettings.png

I have a few questions, if anyone knows the answers

1) Should I be getting a download speed of more than 78kb/s
2) My router says im getting a downstream connection speed of 6688, does this not mean im getting close to 7mb/s down my line?
3) I Have been getting stupidly slow speeds for ages, TalkTalk say its not them, can It be my router slowing my speed down? (I dont have a spare one to try)

Thanks In advanced :)

Ye I would do that, except the bill payer doesnt want the £70 disconnection fee, Im thinking of getting a new router, is it atall possible thats it is the router?

thanks for the replies

a friend of mine uses cisco's network magic to regulate who uses his network. he stops his kids from accessing the net when they are not doing as they are told, it usually does the trick.lol.

Your sync is rubbish for the attenuation, depending on your package you should be seeing over double what you have. Check that all sockets have a microfilter, check for the ring cable etc etc. There's definitely a problem somewhere.

For blocking use Maintenance > Attached Devices, and note the ip addresses of the machines connected.

You can then use that information to block the ip in the firewall rules. Bit long winded but it works.

In answer to your questions in post #4:

1) Yes.
2) Although I'm sure we mean the same thing, I'd say close to 7 Mbps. Strictly speaking you are using the wrong units.
3) It is most probably not TalkTalk 'slowing you down'.

You're connected at 6.6Mbps and should be seeing maximum download rate around 813.96 kB/s.
Could you please show how you figure that?

Not really - welcome to ADSL Max using ADSL1 modulation. I agree, however, that you could reasonably expect twice the sync rate for attenuations below about 30 dB on an ADSL2+ service.

daniel101191,
From your stats it looks like you are on a TalkTalk package provided over BT's wholesale network, as opposed to TalkTalk LLU. Generally speaking, BTW access provides the worst form of ADSL service; not because it involves 'slow' (in terms of sync speed vs. attenuation) ADSL1 modulation but I think a result of relatively expensive 20CN bandwidth which effectively results in ISPs underprovisioning their subscribers and having to resort to very unfriendly traffic management policies.

Not only this, but unfortunately an additional degree of rate limiting is employed on the BT Wholesale 20CN and 21CN networks - the IP Profile. It doesn't always work as it should and, if I were experiencing "slow downloads", is the second thing I would check after making sure the modem sync rate was okay. Check your IP Profile using BT's speedtest site - in your case it should be around 1000 kbps less than your sync rate. The IP Profile effectively defines your maximum download speed. If your BT speedtest result is less than the IP Profile this indicates the worst case - the network is just congested.

With respect to the question in your original post, I didn't understand it clearly enough to attempt a response.

.

Fair enough, I phrased it wrong as I wasn't sure what package he was subscribed to.
