Is there a "You need "X" 3dMarks to play this game" site anywhere??

Sort of thing I am thinking of is...

<Game> <PXXXX for minimum spec> <PXXXX for Recommended/default settings> <PXXXX for all Bells and Whistles>

I would have thought something like this could be quite useful for people wondering if they can play the latest games on their current machine.

(Or, In my case, wondering if the game/games I am wishing to buy for presents will actually work on my friends machines!)

3D Mark isn't really relevant to anything other than 3D Mark, so it's pointless trying to use it as a metric for how games will perform.

I haven't been in a position where I've had to worry about system requirements for a very long time, if you can get the specs of your friends pc's then compare them to the reccomended specs for the game should give you a idea of how smooth the game will be.

I did wonder if such a table was practical, But then all benchmarks suffer from this problem. I would nevertheless have thought that "Something" would be suitable for at least giving an approximate independent guide.

I don't think it's really something that can be solved because of the nature of PCs, there are so many variables.

Different vendors' graphics cards perform differently on different synthetic benchmarks that aren't indicative of raw performance available relative to other cards.

I think benchmarks of specific games is the better way anyway, it's not as easy, but it's too the point.
