Is there an alternative protocol I can use on Vista instead of Microsoft file sharing

I've got a PC setup in my house using Vista. Currently my Dad has a few colleagues connecting to it via Hamachi in order for them to access files.

He now wants to limit the colleagues in the files that they can view. I know this can be done by sharing the files to only particular users.

However to do this I presume the users would have to add accounts to their computers.

What would (obviously) be nicer is if I could assign a user to the folder which required a specified login without the need to add that user to the remote computer.

So it'd work in a similar way to FTP whereby the user puts in a predefined username and password for file access.

I don't want to go down the FTP route because the interface isn't as nice.

Is there a protocol that allows this?

Vista seems to add way more (unnecessary) work.

I'm looking for an alternative because some of the users connecting probably wouldn't want to add another user to their computers.
