Is there an app too

I have about 150 contacts and I'd like to know is there a simple way / app to tell me out of all my contacts who has an iPhone

I know I could just go through them 1 by 1 and try FaceTime but is there a simpler way ?

Not sure if there's an app for it.
But checking if they have iMessage (just by opening the messages app and putting their names in the recipients box, the chat box where you enter your message should turn blue) would probably be more accurate and quicker than trying to do FaceTime with all of them.

unless they don't use imessage as some of my mates don't like it as when they have no data connection they can't text.

remember that in order for imessage to work the must have iOS 5.0, so some user who have an iphone but not updated wont show as iMessage users

Unfortunately, I've not heard of an app that will categorize contacts in that way.

However, if I know someone has an iPhone, when I take their number down I mark it under "iPhone". When you're editing a contact, you can press "Mobile" next to the number to select a category for that number (Eg. Mobile, iPhone, Home, Work etc.).

I'm pretty sure it fails over gracefully to texting if needs be...

That's right they do. It tries a few times and then resorts back to the ol' fashioned method if iMessage isn't successful
