Is there an easy way out of a contract on o2 (or a way to get an upgrade)

Basically I have a N95, iv been a valued o2 customer for 4+ years now, at the moment im in a 18 month contract paying £35 line rental (online tarrif) and have an N95.

Basically what I want is an iPhone, is there anyway I can get this phone without having to pay full price for a handset or paying off the rest of my contract and cancelling?

P.S Current contract runs out in october I think

Seeing as you want an iphone, i reckon the only chance you have is selling your n95 and paying off your existing contract then taking out a new deal.

So far as I know o2 are pretty strict on you upgrading only in the last month of your contract, tho I suppose there is no harm in calling up and asking!

Im allowed to upgrade after 15 months of my 18 month contract and im with o2.

I'm in the same position as you, I have an N95 8GB, have been with o2 for about 3-4 years, paying £35/mo with £5 reduction, my contract expires in September, eligible (according to o2 upgrades, and o2 retentions, 3 times :p) to upgrade in August, I would love to get an iphone3g but they are making it hard, they're saying I need to pay off April, May, June, July, August and September, so £180, then I can get an iphone3g for free on a £35/mo/24mo contract, whereby I'll get 500 texts a month less than what I do now, for £5 extra, bloody iphone tariffs. If I want an 18/mo contract, then its an extra £95 for the phone, so looking at £180 or £275 for the phone.

The alternative, right now is to buy a PAYG phone for £342, put the contract sim in, use my upgrade around december time and sell the iphone on for what I can.

Thanks for the flexibility o2! :p

So whats the difference between the iphone thats out now and the iphone thats out in the summer? which is obviously going to cost more

Pretty sure it'll have a 3.2mp camera but don't know much else about it yet, though I've only quickly looked at macrumors so someone else will probably know more...

I think its going to be a toss up for me between the iPhone 3g (possibly the new model) although i cant find much info on the web, all i keep seeing is this iPhone OS 3.0 being released in the summer? and not an actual phone? How much is the new model likely to cost on say a £35 contract etc?

The N97 is looking tastey indeed, and what I think will be a lot more practical than the iPhone, the iPhone seems to be more of a gimmick to me with plenty of pointless, and one or two useful ones.

It really depends what you use the phone for, as much as I like the look of the iphone and would love one, I'd happily take my phone and an ipodtouch IF I could get web on the go on the touch, something like an Apple/O2 mix alowing touch's on o2 mobileweb for £5 a month or something :)

Won't happen, but would be nice, I'm still tempted to go take the plunge today! :D

I would really like to see the comparison between the current iPhone 3g and the new one apparently due in the summer. The new OS release (3.0) is to be released in the summer and can be loaded onto the current iPhone 3G phone. So really its down to the additional features that the new phone can offer.

I will compare them, then compare them with the Nokia N97

Looking at comparisons between the iPhone and the N97, its swinging towards the N97, far superior phone IMHO. Guess I will have to see and look at network prices.

Yeah the N97 does look nice, I'm really in 2 minds right now, most changes on the iphone will be camera etc.. and the OS 3.0 will robably keepthe software side similar, if it aint broke don't fix it etc.. I would just pay and upgrade early but I don't wanna be stuck on an iphone tariff which offers me less, for more money, pretty much want to buy one outright on PAYG just to avoid the iphone tariffs.

Might have a word see if O2 do a way to get a 2nd sim for your account so I can keep the N95 around to use as a bluetooth modem etc.. for the laptop if ever needed!

One thing it doesnt say is weather the iPhone 3g or the new iPhone will offer video, and to what quality?

One of the good features of my N95 8GB is the video cam and the quality it produces. Iv also got a TomTom and Internal GPS fix at home so im going to give that ago tonight and turn my N95 into the 2nd TomTom device I have

Hmm, would be interested on how to get TomTom on it, I thought it was never made for Symbian, will have to check thier site out and see if there are any updates! :D

The problem with my N95 8GB is that the Cameras seemed to pack up one day, might send it back to get it sorted or see what I can blag in the process :D

Possibility for now could be jokiuspot which turns your 3g phone into a wireless hotspot, and an ipodtouch, then see where things are ina few months! Traditional texting, and apps..!

Iv done some reading on the web today and it seems there is a fix for this tomtom internal gps problem.

I was under the impression tomtom worked fine on the Nokia N95 but you had to have an external bluetooth gps. Tonight im going to test to see if this download now makes tomtom work with internal gps (which a lot of forum searches on the web suggest it does work).

anyone doing all that to change their phone is mad

As said above, I decided aginst the iphone itself, too much :)

Have bought an ipod touch off MM for £115 which I wanted really, then can use my N95 as a wireless hotspot for it when I need to, it is a tad sheepish still, but I'm a fan of them, and in the 3 months i've been in my new job I have treated myself to absolutely nothing, so this is something :)
