Erm... don't quote me on this!!.. but if its got an HDMI port it'll pretty much shove 5.1/7.1 out as standard!!...

I'll have to check my HDX16 to see what the spec says!.. I'm sure it says DD-HD and DTS-HD (so it should do normal DD and DTS)...

i thought most laptops would only transmit stereo over HDMI

You'll want a laptop with either a radeon HD4x00 discrete card, a HD3200/3300 IGP (amd) or nvidia 9300/9400 igp (intel) as these are all hdmi 1.3 capable.
