Is there any point in getting an HD2900 yet?

Well, I have a bit of money to spend next months and am wondering whether to get hold of a DX10 card. At the moment I'm running a X1950Pro 512MB which does well in 95% of games though it has some trouble if you want to max everything at 1280x1024 and crank up the AA. The question is, shall I wait a year till the new line of ATI cards has more variety or shall I get one now? What is the point in getting a DX10 card at this stage?

I would wait if you're happy with your existing card. NV's new generation will be around shortly after Crysis' release, so that may be worth waiting for. ATI's new generation will be Jan/Feb, also may be worth waiting for.

On the other hand, if you want a big boost right now, the 2900XT may be worth getting now :)

Sorry to not provide a definitive answer, but as always its shades of grey rather than black/white.

I think most people (well i did) did not buy the 8800GTX because it was DX10 but because it was the fastest card around at the time. The 2900XT sounds like a great card but i think this first gen DX10 cards are not going to be that great with the first DX10 games. If you want a fast card then get a 2900XT/8800GTX but if you want a card for DX10 games then i would wait for second gen.

Ah come on. How many people thought Crysis was gonna be out just after the release of the 8800's and thought they would be ready for Crysis when it came out? Yes it was the fastest card at the time, but tbh I think the dx10 feature sucked in a lot of people.

Personally if your going to upgrade your card your GPU, at the res your gaming at i would go for a 8800GTS 320, that will be plenty of power. Then when the next batch of Direct X 10 Cards come out you will have a bit of cash saved, from you not getting the HD2900XT.

So October.

Yeah Nvidia's G92 is supposedly October/November, i agree with the above, just get a 320mb GTS for for now to tide you over till the new cards come out.

Well I see the 2900XT prices have come down a little, so yea, you could do far worse - that or an 8800 GTS. There's not much in it, so if you have a preference for Nvida or ATI cards, you can't go too far wrong either way.

Another option would be a cheap 8800 GTS 320MB to tide you over until the next gen.

was on an american forum and bestbuy was selling a 2900Xt for 320 dollars.

if only i had an american friend id pick one up for 180 pounds !
