Is there any problems to buying one pack of four RAM sticks instead of two packs of two?

Hi, I’m planing a new build and would like some advice please.

I am planing on getting 32GB of ddr5 for my future build, is there any problem if I buy first a kit of 2 sticks of 8GB each and then down the line buy another kit of 2 sticks of 8GB each? Or should I save the money first and go and buy a kit of 4x8GB each?

Is there a difference in buying one pack of four RAM sticks instead of two packs of two sticks?

Is there any issues with compatibility or it will be ok if the second kit is the same specifications of the first kit?

Thanks

Since DDR5 is so new, it is hard to say what it will be like. With DDR4, you're generally advised not to do this, since most memory manufacturers/brands don't guarantee that their sticks will be the same, even with the same model number.

If you pick carefully, 32GB of DDR5 can be reasonably cheap (in comparison to DDR4), so ideally I'd just go with that.

That said, if you're sticking with slow (not gaming oriented), 1.1v JEDEC sticks I'd be less concerned.

Why 4 sticks when you can get 2x16gb kits?

We have no idea how AM5 will behave in regards to memory but with Alderlake you want to avoid using 4 sticks for ram over a certain speed, 5600mhz iirc. The easy work around for this is to just get 2 sticks of 16gb, also gives an upgrade path to 64gb if ever needed.

No idea about ddr5, it's too new in all honesty, but I've basically bought 2 and then 2 later on all my builds since my s939 athlons (ddr2 iirc), it's better financially imo.

I've never personally seen any issues with clock speeds/voltage with 4 sticks but there has been some reports of issues on all the platforms I've used.

Now I don't overclock which might make a difference but I've never had issue with buying the same brand/model for the second set of 2 sticks. I'm currently running 2x32 ddr4 sticks with the intention of maybe going 4x32 later (3D work, not games)

I would always go with the future proofing, if you buy 4x8 and want to upgrade you have to replace a stick with a superior stick. You are then left with an stick of ram. :)
