A free OS to run on a hp micro server? Basically I need to stream to an xbox, ipad and iPhone, but I would also like to Map the drive for network storage if you know what I mean? I will be streaming music and videos(HD) the big think I like about WHS is that it is ver graphical and easy to get to grips with.

Thanks
Freddie

You will probably find a Linux distro a bit harder to pick up, but it's probably your best option if free is all you can do. Ubuntu is well supported and probably the easiest if the going gets tough for you support wise (in my opinion of course). Can you really not stretch to buy WHS because from what you have said I don't think you'll enjoy going Linux at this moment in time....

How about something like XBMC running ontop of Linux ? Can always try the live cd out to get a feel of it.

This is like me too. I have just got the HP prolient microserver and have just looked at WHS 2011 but it needs more than 2th of ram. I have a copy of WHS v1 but thought 2011 would be leaps and bounds better.
I want to stream to my xbox and stuff too.

I wonder what freenas is like ?

Look into Amahi - currently runs on top of Fedora 12/14, but will be on ubuntu soon enough.
It enables you to manage drive pools (missing from the latest WHS) and install apps (like sabnzbd, sickbeard, couch potato, mythTV, miniDNLA for streaming to xbox/ps3 etc.) through a web interface.
Runs quite nicely on 1GB RAM. Got my microserver running Fed14 with amahi with all four drive bays full. Nice little quiet machine

I am merely reporting what I have heard. Someone mentioned in the big long thread that the HP microserver has issues with ubuntu, but they have it working happily on debian. I do not understand what their issue was, but wanted to to merely encourage someone to look into it further.

On mine, I'm running a modified (by myself) version of VortexBox, which is based of Fedora 14, and does loads of media server stuff - ripping DVDs, CDs, streaming through DLNA, Squeezebox, some other things too.
