Hi,

I think I have finally decided on what to get to build a new machine from scratch, just wondering what people think (opinions welcome, prefer facts). I also want to know if there is anything im missing at all.

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
PSU: Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU
Mobo: Asus P5K Deluxe WIFI
PCU: Intel Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
RAM: OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2
GPU: Asus GeForce 8800 GTS HTDP 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
HDD: 2 X Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache

Other: Optical drive, Sound card, Floppy drive, Thermal compound

Is there anything blatently obvious that im missing that I will need in order to build my new machine?????

Let me know what you think as well. I believe its going to cost me about £1100

One thing people might suggest, is changing the graphics card to the GT :) That if you wish to wait for the stock to come in...I say that cause going by reviews the GT is the better of the two cards.

And if your going to be clocking the cpu, you might want to perhaps consider an after market cooler...Perhaps the freezer 7 pro, Tuniq tower, or Noctua perhaps?
 
you could drop the PSU down to the 520W and it should still power your pc. (wait for comformation first)

you will also need a 64bit OS (assumign you havent got one) to see and use all that ram

do you need wifi?

Done a good spec there, only couple of things, are you planning on overclocking! If yes you can buy the oem version of that cpu which you only get the CPU and not the HSF and purchase an after market one.

2nd I am hearing there is new version of the GTX coming out shortly, so wether or not you want to change that to a GT which is only slightly behind in termes of performance, you can always check the graphics forum to see peoples thoughts.

I thought the GT was the version 1 down from the GTS models?

Currently the GT is the faster of the two :)

However Nvidia are supposed to be re-releasing a new GTS....(Confusing eh?) Which is supposed to be faster than the current GT.
 


Bit cheaper than what you first specced.

Used 4X1gb sticks, add another £70 for 2x2gb

Kept the same mobo as im not up-to0date on mobo's...Could be better one's but I don;t know what they are.

520W should be more than enough

If you can wait get the new GT as it's better and cheaper than the GTS;)

Haven't added Vista 64, another ~£100 for that.

You could have a mess around with this spec i just ordered.
 
So if I were to go for the 8800GT instead of GTS I would be dropping from 680MB down to 512MB but has a faster core and memory speed, thus making the GT the better option. Is this correct?

Also what is the best make of the 8800GT/GTS models. Is it Asus, BFG, EVGA, OCUK etc.
Which manufacturer should I pick

Also I might actually down grade to a 520psu instead of 650 because I probably wont be running crossfire on my machine anyway as I am mainly going to be using it for virtual server type stuff as opposed to heavy gaming.

Yar, Only go above the 520W if your going SLI/Crossfire IMO.

The GT is better because of it's higher clocks and more streaming proccessors.. I also think it's made smaller so less power is used and it's cooler.

I only picked the EVGA because of the 10 yr warrenty;)

Its a completely reworked core, far more efficient, not only in power consumption, but also in work done clock for clock.

Even at the same speeds as a GTS, the GT does more work per clock cycle.

Any preference on GPU manufacturer?

Okay so the next question is are there any preferred CPU coolers out there?

And I did also not know that at the same clock speed the GT was better. Learning every day;):D

They didn't.

The GTS and GTX have been around a fair length of time now, they came out on the first incarnation of the G80 core. Then the ultra was released (G80+).

Recently, the GT was released, on the new G92 core. This core is more efficient, and as a result, the lower priced new 8800GT's are walking all over the old GTS's and even compete with the GTX's when midly clocked.

There is about to be a re-release of the GTS, which speculation would have us believe is going to be G92 based. This will be followed up by the reworked GTX one would assume.

Going OT now but why don;t they just bring out the 9XXX series if they have the G92 core working:confused:
 
Because the G92, although being a new range of core code numbers, isn't "that" much different in architecture to the G80. They are both still DX10 (not 10.1) parts, and they both offer similar performance levels. The main reason for the switch from G8x to G9x naming was the drop from 90nm fabrication to 65nm fabrication.

The next "big" release from nVidia will be their 8800GX2 card, which whilst being thier second generation GX2 card (7900GX2 being the first), is a big step towards the end goal for nVidia, and will really help along SLi if they manage to get what is planned right :)

Still Ot but still...

So the G92 Isn't a bad new core it's the G80 on a 65nnm process...

A GX2... I googled that and it looks like it's two boards together... Why can;t they make multi core GPU's like CPU's?

Or is that for another thread? ;):D
 
Its not quite as simple as the G92 being a shrunken G80, there are differences, hence its greater workload efficiency clock for clock. Its most definately re-worked, similar, but not the same.

ATI's next big release is rumoured to be multi-core, but at the moment the news is just hearsay.
