Is there anything wrong in this picture?

Some more info.

That is the front brake on my Mondeo.

Which, up until an hour ago, was fine. Having some fun on the moors, usual stuff. Suddenly I noticed a worrying metallic scraping sound from the front brakes. I pulled over, had a look, couldn't see anything wrong. Gingerly pulled over, it was fine... for a few second, then it came back, then it went away, then it was back... I braked, pulled over, released the brake and the scraping continued until I stopped. Pulled away, its fine again, etc.

Not sure whats wrong :( Car still stops ok, but nasty noises = bad.

Front pads are approx 6mm in thickness.

I've no problems with getting new discs and pads but I guess what I need to know is whether its safe to use the car or whether I'm on the bus until the weekend (omg!). Logic would dictate horrid noise = leave the car on the drive, but hmmmm.

My 206 fronts do it when they're hot. Like country road hammering hot.

It is fair to say they had been subjected to some 'country road hammering' immediatly before the problem started....

Took the other wheel off - looked the same as this side.

Took it for another drive around the estate - horrid scraping sound when braking and for a while, when driving (I didn't get above 20mph it was making a noise without the brakes being on - not constantly, but there was a pattern to it :p

I guess if I just get new discs and pads even if it is a stone it'll come out when it gets done :p

I was actually shocked by that statement. You seem to be a fountain of knowledge on most things car related but you dont get your own hands dirty?

I service the car myself but I'm not super-mechanically minded :)

Changing oil and filters and stuff isn't rocket science though :p

Have you checked the other side of the disc and the other wheel? What you've described sounds exactly like what happens when the pads have worn out.

Would you get a noise after you release the brakes, though, if it was pad wear?

Well I'm really not thrilled at the prospect of driving it around like that so I'll call into Rapid Fit on the way to Uni and get it done - they are usually suprisingly reasonable for a Ford Main dealer.

No complaints here :) Thrashed mine on a daily basis for the last year and it got through its MOT first time a couple of weeks ago with no advisories :D Not bad for a 5 year old car. Never had to replace anything but consumables either :)

To be honest I'm dead impressed with mine, over 130k now, owned it for 2 years 3 months and this is the first thing it's ever needed bar tyres, an annual service and petrol.

I would do but I'm right in the middle of my exams at uni and just don't have the time - I just need the car to work :(

Rapid Fit are 1 mile away on the way to Uni and should do it while I wait, if the price takes the mick I'll use this weird thing called a bus until I've got time to sort it out but otherwise..

All fixed - new discs and pads, problem completely gone away, car stops no trouble, sorted.

Well happy - first thing thats 'gone wrong' and it turned out only to be consumables :D

Could you take a picture of the same angle as you did before, just for a comparison shot to see the difference of brand new disks and pads. Curious as to see how much thicker the discs are etc.

If I get some time, yea. Might be able to do it on Friday :)
