Is there anything 'wrong' with 1920x1200 monitors?

I've been thinking about upgrading my ageing 22" 1680x1050 Dell monitor and the 24" 1920x1200 screens have caught my eye. The reason I ask if there's something weird about them is that there's so few of them and pretty much every monitor recommendation thread boils down to 1080p or 1440p.

I play a variety of games (FPS, RTS, RPG etc) and prefer IPS so I thought a 1200p monitor might be good option since its sharper than 1080p but not as GPU hungry as a 1440p screen.

Thoughts?

Aspect ratio went out of fashion, nothing wrong with them though, many prefer them as the extra vertical space can be useful.

As said they became unfashionable, especially once 1080p was standardised for TVs. A lot of games do odd things as well with the aspect ratio such as stretching a 1080p image rather than display a proper 1200p image.

I have three of them in 5760x1200. Despite this, I barely ever game. I use them simply because of the extra vertical space. I like it very much indeed. :)

It helps in programs like Blender and even Photoshop in my honest opinion as well. I also think that it is nice for top-down (ish) style games, like some MMO's or things like Anno.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this already (maybe they're not aware). The vast majority of game titles use HOR+ scaling. This means that the vertical Field Of View (FOV) is fixed and the horizontal FOV is altered according to aspect ratio. Because 16:10 is relatively narrow (less width) this scaling causes a loss of horizontal FOV compared to a 16:9 monitor.

This isn't a massive FOV loss, but it's still there. The same scaling behaviour explains why 21:9 monitors can have such immensely wide FOVs horizontally. You're used to 16:10 so it won't be a relative loss, but going 1920 x 1080 would gain you extra FOV and extra pixels compared to what you have now. If you feel you'd prefer the extra height of 16:10 for desktop work etc. then this adjustment may not be worth it for you.

Thanks guys.

I only use my PC for gaming and web browsing so it sounds like i'd be better off with a 1080p screen. Naturally I'd prefer a 1440p 27" jobby but i couldn't afford one unfortunately, nor the GPU's to power it.

Pros
- more vertical pixels, good for web browsing, programming, etc.

Cons
- HOR+ scaling means you see less stuff in some games when compared to 16:9

I have 1920x1200 and I couldn't go to 1920x1080. But 2560x1440 would be better.
