is there anyway to speed up my internet and ping times?
or is it a case of it is what it is!

im on sky broadband max package which should be 16mb im currently getting about 9mb downspeed and 0.9mb upload.
ping times according to speedtest.nte show 45ms.

speeds and times done using speedtest.net

We need more information for example the downstream/upstream sync speeds, noise margins and attenuation.

Can be obtained from the router: http://192.168.0.1 - username: admin password: sky

9Mb down is not to be sniffed at as this may be the max your line may be able to support. Ping times look normal too for a Sky line (with interleaved enabled as standard).

You should bare in mind that speedtest is crap. Not once have I achieved anything near the download speeds I can actually attain.

You're better off finding a download for a file from a big 'player' such as Microsoft, Google et al. That will give you a much truer indication of speed. Alternatively, newsgroups.

I guess it's a case of there only being around four speedtest servers based in the UK, and they're all getting hammered by speedtest users.

To summarize: speedtest is crap, if your line is sync'ing at 16Mb/s - generally that's what you'll be capable of getting (so around 1200-1600KB/s (leaway given for overheads)).

Yeah, but IS there any way to speed things up ?
I get my internet via a microwave system which works some of the time, but even at best is so very slow..
I have seen programs that claim to speed things up - is is possible ?

Ensure:
1. your router is plugged into the master phone socket, not an extension
2. the cabling on your property is not too old and degraded as both will affect the attenuation of the signal and hence the ping and speeds.

Other than that there isn't a lot you can do.

Unless you fancy enroling in a university for uber speed:p

Enroling in a university not likely, as there are none near us - certainly no place that would have me...
We have land line here - phone is a radio phone and internet is via a microwave system - line of sight to the aerial and good weather required !
