i was going to buy one of these laptops but i can only afford the first one, should i wait till i can get the 2nd one or is there difference not much and maybe i can just add another 8gb ram later?

anyone info would be amazing as i dont know much about these

Lenovo Legion 5 17 (2021) AMD Ryzen 5 8GB RAM 512GB SSD Nvidia RTX 3060 17.3" 144Hz
AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600H Hexa Core Processor (16M Cache, 3.3GHz, up 4.2GHz)

Lenovo Legion 5 17 (2021) AMD Ryzen 7 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Nvidia RTX 3060 17.3" 144Hz
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H Processor 3.0 GHz (16M Cache, up to 4.3 GHz)

What is the main use of the laptop going to be?

The biggest difference other than the ram is the CPU. One being a Ryzen 5 (6 cores I believe) and the other a Ryzen 7 (8 cores I believe).

For demanding work that will make use of all the cores then the Ryzen 7 will perform better. Your usage may not warrant it though.

How you upgrade the RAM depends on how it's configured when supplied. If it's 2x4GB DIMMs then you'd have to replace both of them with a 2x8GB kit but if it's a single 8GB DIMM then you could add another of the same spec.

As Indigo says, your usage will determine whether the R7 5800H is worth the extra. I have the R5 5600H in my Legion 5P and I only have two programs that really make it work hard.

I’m not familiar with the 17” models, at that size they should really offer QHD displays but instead they are all FHD, so I’d opt for the 15”. (The 15” is still FHD but it’s sharper as the screen is smaller) ( the 5 Pro comes with a QHD+ 16x10 165Hz display ).

If looking at the 15” models, I’d try and get one with a 165Hz display as it has 100% sRGB so it is a nice colourful display, whereas the 120Hz model is 60% sRGB.

sorry guys for the lack of info. and i can be terrible at these pc specs etc these days and thank u for the help, i will use freemake video editor a little but not much and mostly ebay via web and play games such as world of warcraft and gta online and ark, survival evolved which is a crazy demanding game graphics wise and i just hope the ark game works ok which i think it will

and i always look for 17 because i thought 15 would be too small but that might be just me having always had desktop pc's. so if 15 is better in certain ways then i could do that and i didnt know that the ram was in x2 4gbs. even though i narrowed my laptop choice to legion i didnt know there was going to be so many versions lol, i just want to get the best i can for my budget which is £1250 atm

That budget will get you an in-stock Legion 5 Pro with a Ryzen 7 CPU, 16GB RAM and the excellent 16" WQXGA screen that Kohaashi mentions. The only downside is just 256GB SSD but there's a second slot so it's easily upgradable when required.

I also see that the second option in your OP is available from OcUK for your budget.

At that budget what Snapshot suggested sounds the best option. Bigger than a 15" option and better resolution too.

Also be mindful of double checking ram upgrade potential as there are other issues too.

I wanted to upgrade a HP laptop once and although it had two RAM slots it would only accept either 1 8GB stick or a combination of 1 x 2GB + 1 x 4GB stick which confused me somewhat.

I also found when looking for a laptop recently that some chips are soldered on and therefore not replaceable where as some you can remove and replace or there's an additional slot to add more.

If only these things were simple!! The laptop I purchased has 8GB but I'll upgrade it with a second stick at some point.

thanks but i cant seem to find the one your talking about on Oc site !

should i wait for the Legion 5 Pro 16 to come back in stock instead of buying this

Lenovo Legion 5 17 (2021) AMD Ryzen 7 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Nvidia RTX 3060 17.3" 144Hz
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H Processor 3.0 GHz (16M Cache, up to 4.3 GHz)

That's 'cos I was looking on Lenovo's own site.

The screen is not in the same league as the 5 Pro. It's only FHD and 300 nits rather than WQXGA and 500nits.
