Is there software to emulate multi-monitors (on one monitor)?

We all know how useful two monitors can be. Being able to maximise two application at the same time knowing that you can see them both without either focussing over the other etc...

With some of the new bigger monitors (eg: 20" widescreen) is it possible with some sort of software to set up two virtual monitors. ie: Split it two thirds and one third and then the in effect you have two virtual monitors on just the one, with all the advantage that gives?

So for example, with the above example, you dedicate the right third of your monitor to watching a film, or having outlook open or something, but then on the left two thirds you can browse or do something else etc... Knowing that you will not have to concerned with focussing or size issues as application will be contained within their "virtual monitor" space.

Not heard of any apps that can do this. However it certainly would be favorite with people with bigger monitors.

You could try resizing windows so that they fit how you want them, although this could be a lot of hassle. If you want to have a lot of different apps involved.

I know you can do it with the standard NVidia driver control panel.

You sure? So software thinks it has two monitors, but infact there just one split say 50/50 down the middle? (eg: each 640/1024 big)

Shame I'm on ATI :)

I've looked at the Catalyst Control Center and there doesn't seem anything to do this in it :(

Is there any software out there than can easily split one monitor up into two (or more) virtual monitors?

I think you need an Amiga to do the effect you want. pull one screen down 50% and have a seperate screen running behind it ;)

Or , you can try ATI Hydravision which may allow you to layer two virtual desktops.

Well I've just looked through about half a dozen applications and none of them offer the facility I'm talking about... I'm a bit puzzled really as what I'm suggesting sounds obvious and useful :(

Right click on taskbar.

Tile windows vertically.

Done.

Its not permanent but its dead easy to do. Only really works well on big monitors but that's going to be the same with anything that splits the desk space in half.

Hmmm... Bit of a blag :)

The moment you do anything it's messed up :)

Ideally you should be able to split your desktop into two (or more), and then each basically behaves just like a different monitor...
