IIRC you can get films ect that are custom sides that turn any monitor into a touchscreen
That might work with a CRT or glass fronted LCD, but I would hate to be pressing the soft LCD (through the touch film), for fear of damaging it.
There are various types of touch screen:
Capacitive (very good accuracy, but only works with finger and is quite expensive), made from glass.
Resistive (good accuracy and can work with finger, pen, pretty much anything), made from glass.
Surface Acoustic Wave (good accuracy, works with anything, but is susceptible to interference), made from glass.
Infra Red (average accuracy, works with anything), doesn't need glass but is recommended.
Largest capacitive touch I have seen is 32" wide, but I think you could get one up to 57".
The 32" touch screen on it's own (no monitor) is a couple of hundred quid.
