Got a BFG 275 GTX OCX, end of last week, and today was the first time i have tried a game on it, left 4 dead. The game seems to play fine for a few minutes but then the sound stutters and the game freezes for a few seconds then will be fine then will do it again a few seconds later and the goes to the desktop, my system does NOT hang i can still got to Task Manager and see that Left 4 Dead 'Isnt Responding'. Is this a gfx card problem or windows 7, have tried a different set of drives but still get the same problem. Havent tried any other games

Sounds like a GFX driver issue, you can either change your drivers or disable Multicore rendering in the advanced display options (in game).
It happens too on XP. I am now running 190.62 with no problems. (285 GTX)

Just tried Crysis Warhead and that does the same kind of thing, no stuttering sound or freezing though, just get a black screen, with the sound still playing in the back ground, have to bring up task manager to quit the game

I have had a few driver failures while running BF2 with a 275 and win 7RC and thats with 190.62 drivers while running in XP SP3 compatibility mode!

Do you get an error saying display driver has stopped working at all when this happens? If so it would probably be a GPU too highly OC'd or getting too hot.

What Happy said? If not check the event log. If thats what you get then most likely a gpu prob, what temps?

If not try memtest for windows then prime95 to test memory then cpu respectively to prove it.

The game appears to freeze, sound hangs, screen black, Ctrl/alt/del to task manager shows game as non responding, select and will sometimes restart, sometimes a popup says driver failure, system recovered etc but it disappears before i read it all.

As i am playing a 4 year old game, with good, massively overspeced hardware that has come from the now weak requirements of 2005, i blame the OS not the hardware.

I did play crysis once on win7, but i had not patched from the original launch disc and it crashed in minutes, as i had completed it already it was just a DX10 test, I didnt bother.

As for temps, my 275 is as supplied, overclocked, i have not OC any more, in my case and from temp monitoring, its not a heat issue in my case (no pun)!

One 100% way to rule out the GPU is to switch the fanspeed to 100% then play and if still does it then it's windows etc.

Have you tried either running or installing the game using the XP compatibility options?

Well i ran furmark back the other day, and temps under stress got to about 88-90c on the GPU, but it never crashed. I get no error messages or anything, apart from task manager saying said game is 'not responding'. It wouldnt be my new SSD would it?

I hate to say it but until win7 goes live you,me and many others are stuffed I reckon, I cannot even get my ISP to help me as they dont support win7 yet when i have latency issues.

If you are seriously worried about you hardware, grap XP/vista and install, for me i will wait another 7 weeks or so but if you have warranty return worries you may need the answer quicker!

I doubt it. The reason I say it because you have OCX, and they have been several people who have the highly pre-ovclocked GPUs having similar issues (but with the display driver message) and it's a case of them getting too hot with the fan on auto and crashing. GPUs can be very fussy with the clocks, ie it can get much hotter with a lower clock and be fine, but will tip up at a lower temp with a higher clock etc. Anyway your Furmark temps aren't too bad, so hopefully it isn't that. Have you tried the comparabilities thing I suggested earlier?

If you have a desktop shortcut or any shortcut (in win7) right click properties and then select "compatibility" you can choose from a drop down the OS you want to run the program as.

It usually pays to be on the PC as a administrator and to run the program as such!

K, just tried that and still happens. this time the sound started skipping, and then went back to the desktop, i left it about 30 seconds this time and then it went back to the game, then 50 seconds later it did it again, but this time when i left it it didnt go back to the game the sound just kept stuttering.

The more i think about it the more i dont think it is hardware, maybe it could be my soundcard drivers?? As when i bring up the task manager, ther cpu usage is only at 52% and memory about the same, so its not like the system is getting throttled or anything when it kicks me from the game

This (l4d looping & crashing), happens with my 9600m gt under all driver revisions I have tried appart from forceware 175.90, I have tried everything but it seems the only drivers that work for me are 175.90... Might be worth giving them a shot.

Just read windows 7, using vista 64 here, dont know if you can use that driver set on win7.

Have installed Vista, and it still happens. Im going to install Windows 7 on my Spinpoint F1 drive and see if it does it on that just to rule out my SSD before RMA'ing the gfx card. Seem strange that i can run furmark for 20 minutes without any problems though

Well it must be the GFX card then, as it still does it on my other drive. Seem strange how it will cause Left 4 Dead to be 'Isnt Responding' and then leave it a while and left for dead will start responding again. Guess it can only be the gfx card. Strange thing was when i was playing Left 4 Dead online other people playing the game said they were getting massive lag when my game was buggering up!!
