An early 730i is pointless compared to a 728i - less economy, similar performance as is the 735 compared to the 740 for similar reasons.
There are many more 728i's for the simple reason that it is the sensible 7 Series choice (of the e38 era ) imo.
Sure, its no ball of fire off the line, but its hardly rubbish in the grand scheme of things.
Overtaking was fine with it, ok you had to put the 'box into "Sport" mode & work the engine to get it going, but this is only momentary it'll soon "lift its skirt & go" as such and working the M52 is no major deal - its a peach of an engine that thrives on revs.

Once past said obstruction, its back into "Economy mode" and it (the 728i) will cruise happily at quite illegal speeds all day......
As an entry level wafter, the 728i is a very sensible choice imo.
Sure, if I had an e38 again, I probably would go for a 740 as they do perform a lot better but to dismiss the 728i as "rubbish" due to its performance is wrong.
I suspect your still to drive / test an e38 728i Fox? Perhaps once / if you do, you'll appreciate it for what it is.
The above said, why were debating e38's in a DannyW thread I don't know!
