Is this a decent gaming PC?

If you're needing a screen and peripherals within about £800, then maybe consider something along these lines...

In 18 months or so when you need an upgrade to the graphics card, we can install that for you if we've built the system, as part of our warranty service. But starting with a better processor will give you a great start going forwards.

If you can stretch your budget now, going with a GTX 970 will be a brilliant option. Got one myself and they're brilliant.

Put together this little spec. Kits a bit old but it's a cracking little machine for the money.

Squeezed in all peripherals and OS for under budget. I'd personally get the Dell U2414H if you can stretch, and there's some nicer K/M combos for a bit more money. Don't know much about the monitor but I picked it because it's VA and doesn't look too tacky.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £798.75
(includes shipping: £0.00)

If you aren't comfortable building your own rig, there's some decent pre-built options (like seabiscuits), however the CPU, RAM, Motherboard and aftermarket cooler all come pre-assembled and overclocked, so there's not much to putting this together at all.

I really, really recommend the GTX970 as a bang for buck option, especially at that res.

Other questions to ask yourself :

  • Do I need wireless connectivity (WiFi, Blueooth)?
  • Do I need a headset, speakers e.t.c?

EDIT : Drollic inspired me re: upgrades. You can pop an i5/i7, a bigger Ram kit and newer graphics cards later on. There's still plenty of scope for upgrade with this rig.

I'd suggest saving a little more so you get a lot more for your money. 970 or equal to, i5, 16gb, 256gb+ ssd, win 10 and a 1080p monitor are all must haves. Don't skimp on a power supply either if you ever intend to upgrade to i7 with a high end card.

Do you really think an i5 and 16gb are must haves for a 1080p gaming rig? That's not a facetious remark I'm genuinely intrigued.

My rig (rather unimpressive by todays standards) has 980s in SLI and an overclocked 4790k and I don't find I use more than 8GB at 1200p.
