Hi all,

I'm at my uncles house at the moment doing some upgrades to his computer. Ive looked at the specs and it looks like it is running a single core P4 3.2Ghz on a 775 platform. The PC is about 3 years old, if not slightly older..

Here are the pics from CPU-Z:

If it can support the Dual core processors, do you think it will need a BIOS update in order to support Core2's? Will it be the first Core2's that will only be supported, and not the newer 45nm ones?

All the PC is used for is Music production where Quad is fully supported by our host application, so would a Q6600 work possibly?

Sorry if i sound dumb, but ive not followed intel hardware for about 4 or 5 years.

Thanks in advance. :)

I've checked the board's specs & It doesnt look like it supports Core2 at all. Probably supports Pentium D945 though.

That looks to be based on the 865P chipset which does not support Core2Duo as far as I know and almost certainly not quad. I think you'll need to simply buy a new CPU, motherboard and probably Ram at a minimum.

I'd very much doubt a 3 year old computer would be able to support a much newer 45nm chip. My dad's 945 chipset, probably the same age, can't. It can support newish CPU's but not the latest 45nm.

Ah i see, i just saw 775 and noticed that still it is being used as a platform for Core2's.

Upgrading anything else really isnt an option as he has just bought 2GB of DDR RAM for £30 and isnt really wanting to spend loads on a new computer just yet.

Was just looking at something like the E5200 at about £50 to tie him over for a few years.

What is the D945 dual core chip like against similar priced core 2's? On paper it looks damn fast for a tad over £100 but i know it wont be. Any benchmarks around so i can take a look?

Thanks again. :)

Try messing about with the Tom's Hardware Guide CPU chart as you should have a few options in there. Not the D945 there but there are other chips you could see for comparison purposes.

Your uncle did quite well getting 2gb of Ram for £30 if that is new, I wouldn't really advise upgrading that CPU without changing the motherboard and Ram as well, it would be throwing good money after bad to coin a phrase.

Ok, could you spec me the cheapest mobo that would work with the new E5200? Aiming for £100 for cpu + mobo and another £30 for 2GB of RAM.

Thanks.

Thats a v cheap new mobo, you may also want to look in the b grade section

Does that support the newer 45nm CPUs (with or without a bios flash)?

If not then something like this is slightly over the budget but you should be able to sell the DDR for what you paid for it even secondhand.
