Is this a flywheel issue?

Bought a Vectra (2007 1.8 vvt) 3 months ago for £1900, 56,000 on the clock, tidy motor with no issues what so ever, AA inspeced and paid cash. Just something to get me to work and back.

My clutch went about two months after I got it so I had it changed. The other day I set off for work and I instantly had a problem through the gears, stupid amount of juddering and over the last 2 days its got progressively worse to the point where I have to turn my music up so I dont hear it clunk into gear and whine up to speed.

Ive had a price of £253.15 (1/8th the price of the car) dealer only for a Solid flywheel.

Does it sound like a flywheel problem, my mechanic says it sounds more box related than flywheel, hes looking tonight.

I were tempted not to come on here for advice but in all fairness you guys do provide me with the smartest answers.

Certainly sounds like it, but I'm surprised anyone would bother getting a clutch changed without changing the flywheel, you'd have already footed most of the labour cost with the clutch change.

Clutch was 370 repaired, it was another 300 at the time for the flywheel, Ive recently realised its worth getting both done at the same time. My buddy is a mechanic though so hes just going to let me do most the work myself in his garage to save me the cost this time.

I just wanted to get peoples experience on flywheels and if anyone knows where I might be able to find one other than a dealer and why theyre dealer only parts..

I have no expert insight, but when my old manual Vectra C (2005) started juddering and whining just as you described (juddering and then whining up to speed, sometimes all the time) it was indeed the gearbox.

I actually ignored it until it went bang and i lost all drive. Was definitely the gearbox (local mechanic took a look at it as i did contemplate getting it fixed before i sold it as spares).

This is rather gutting!

Saying that, im getting priced around £160 for a gearbox so that isnt too bad.

For me it wasnt worth it because the car was end of life anyway and totally abused. I think i priced it all up at around £900-1000 (may as well do the clutch at the same time obviously). That was with a used low mileage gearbox & a new (obviously) clutch kit IIRC.

I think im looking at about £160 for a gearbox plus fitting and then £250 for the flywheel fitting at the same time, clutch was done at £370 recently so im looking at about a total spend of 1k too, stupid amount of money to spend.

The gearboxes in these are notorious. F17 5 speed gearbox from the facelift (06-09) Vectra C with the 1.8 VVT Z18XER engine. I work in a vauxhall breakers and as soon as we get a good one it goes straight back out the door again.

Did the petrol Vectras even have a dual mass? Seeing as the dealer is selling you a single mass flywheel?

Whining would sound like it's the gearbox, it is also possible that the gearbox oil wasn't topped up correctly after removing the driveshaft when replacing the clutch.

the petrol turbo's do iirc. this particular engine/gearbox combo is solid mass

Gearbox has just gone funnily enough.

Lost first and second gears, got any in stock? Haha Id just had it looked at by me pal and I were driving it home when the incident occurred, managed to get it home, he thought the bearings could be done but now hes unsure.

Ive just bought a 64 plate Fiesta ST2 though so im dropping the vectra at me mates for him to sort out when he can and then selling it.

I'm afraid we don't at the moment. At a push you can use the box out of the older 1.8 Z18XE engine. just need to change the selector on the top and its got a slightly different final drive ration.

Can't be as bad as the M32 which I have?

oh no, M32's are the worst. 9/10 of the M32's we get in have knackered bearings.
