I think I have hit the nail on the head with this one with the possibility that I have made a rookie error with the board/CPU compatibility but hey ho.

Is this a good build? And my budget is about £950 - £1000

Its a good build but I would purchase some quiet fans for the H60 to replace the stock ones which can be very loud.

Far from cheep but they seem to be the gold standard for radiator fans.

Also the 660Ti has not received great reviews for its bang to buck so it might be worth getting something else, no experience of it myself though so perhaps someone can offer a first hand opinion link

I like the ideas chaps and the 8gb ram should be sufficient to be fair. It's a good job I got a few spare scythe fans hanging around ;) could I replace the cooler fans with the scythes?

8GB of RAM will be fine.

Yeah, replacing the stock fans with the scythe's will give you better performance and a quieter PC.

Are you going to use the money ssaved (8GB down to 16GB) to get a GTX 670?

It's exactly what I will do. I've been out of the loop of cards over the past year. How does the 670 compare to a 580?

Which would you suggest?

Out of 580, 660ti and 670? The 670 hands down. If you look at the prices on OCUK (i'll show some for you), there isn't much in it price wise.

Of the 3 the 580 has the lowest performance but comes in at the price of some 670's:

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 580 DS SuperClocked 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Borderlands 2 PC Game £319.99
1 x KFA2 GeForce GTX 580 OC MDT 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99
1 x ZOTAC GeForce GTX 580 1536 MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Borderlands 2 PC Game £299.99
1 x OcUK GeForce GTX 580 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £279.95
Total : £1,211.92 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Now the price of the 660TI is a bit different. It beats the 580 but comes dangerously close to the 670 in price, which is a card not limited be memory bandwidth (see the reviews posted in this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18433152

Here are the prices:

YOUR BASKET
1 x KFA2 GeForce GTX 660TI EX OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £281.99
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 660TI SuperCclocked 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (3662-KR) with FREE Borderlands 2 PC Game £263.99
1 x KFA2 GeForce GTX 660TI EX OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £259.99
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 660Ti Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Borderlands 2 PC Game £259.98
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 660TI 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (3660-KR) with FREE Borderlands 2 PC Game £249.95
Total : £1,327.90 (includes shipping : £10.00).

The only model I don't know how the reviews look at the 3gb model but I doubt it's worth coming so close to 670 prices.

Here are the 670 prices, the fastest card of the 3 (the cheapest 5):

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (N670GTX-PM2D2GD5/OC) £319.99
1 x KFA2 GeForce GTX 670 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £319.99
1 x Palit GeForce GTX 670 Jetstream 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £309.95
1 x Gainward GeForce GTX 670 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £309.95
1 x OcUK GeForce GTX 670 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99
Total : £1,571.87 (includes shipping : £10.00).

However as I said previously, do not discount AMD. Here are the cheaper 7970 models out there:

YOUR BASKET
1 x XFX HD 7970 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion £319.99
1 x Powercolor HD 7970 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion £319.99
1 x Club3D HD 7970 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion £319.99
1 x MSI HD 7970 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion £319.99
1 x HIS HD 7970 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion (H797F3G2M) £299.99
Total : £1,591.96 (includes shipping : £10.00).

In a lot of games these cards top the Nvidia range at that price point. It really boils down to what games you play as to whether Nvidia or AMD are the better choice. Although ridiculous resolutions (3x 1920*1200 monitors) the AMD card may be favoured on some games.

Also worth noting is the 7950.... only if you wish to overclock however. A lot of headroom on that card and the cheapest of them all. It competes very well with the 660ti on performance. Here's the cheapest two sold here:

YOUR BASKET
1 x HIS HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion (H795F3G2M) £254.99
1 x HIS HD 7950 IceQ 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion (H795Q3G2M) £239.99
Total : £506.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

EDIT: Also that AMD 3 promotion looks nice :)

What is the cooling like on the MSI 670 OC? Looks rather standard to me.

Exactly as you suspect reading the customer reviews. Some chap was getting 80c until he turned the fans up. May be worth investing slightly more for better cooling? Up to you.
* The KFA2 is the same price and gets better reviews for cooling :)
