I am a regular user of a site called saynoto8070.com and while its a great site, it has not seen any improvement in the last couple of years, and it seems the be gradually getting more and more ad ridden.

I have and so have others repeatedly offered for free to help improve the site, with a wap version, and iphone apps and he has ignored, or refused every time, the site is very much for the site owners own benifit, which is his choice however I would like a site which is there for the users, and only uses ad revenue to help reclaim the costs.

Given the current economic down turn and peoples need to save money with rising costs of living, I though now might be as good a time as any to create a new site, run by my self with my own researched content, not just stealing his work.

My housemates are interested in supporting me and I would see an inital basic setup where users can submit numbers and search for them, with a wap / basic html site for mobile use as well, later evolving into an API for mashups and a iPhone app/web app for people to use.

I would like to know...

a. Is this a good idea?
b. Where do I stand legally (its not an original idea - yellow pages for example)
c. What things do I need to consider?
d. PHP or Rails? I know PHP but I have dabbled with Rails and in terms of hosting its fine, but Rails would probably allow for a more AJAX'y site which is what I am going for, search suggestions etc... (DO NOT read web 2.0 btw).

Feedback appreciated, again I am not looking to clone or steal his content, only to provide people with a better alternative, which is more community driven and better maintained, and more open.

I think it's a brilliant idea - I've noticed the same, that site isn't particularly easy to use, it's not always up to date, and it's appalling for use from a mobile device!

I'd certainly be willing to help if I can at all... not sure how exactly...

Mobile Premium (as they're seen as "premium rate" numbers)
LoCall Mobile (due to the 0845's being called "LoCall" when first introduced)
No08xx

Erm... that's me for now! ;)

It is a good idea, that website/idea has a lot of potential and they are not really developing it as they should be. But saynoto0870.com has saturated the web; I don't even know of any other site that does the same thing.
You'll need to do a lot of work to get anywhere, IMO.

I think you're running uphill from the onset. A greased hill at that.

People don't care about usability.... the owner doesn't care. Unfortunately the website has become instantly popular.

It's like an alternative to youtube... it just isn't going to fly.

Yours might be better - in fact, I'm not going to insult you, it would be better. But. People are dumb.

I agree with you, but there are youtube alternatives that have more features (hd, widescreen) and (I believe) are flying :p
e.g. http://www.vimeo.com
Maybe not flying anywhere near as high, but still.

TBH on the whole video front, youtube is only for junk where the quality doesn't matter. And because it has such a strict takedown policy, no tv show is worth watching on there anyway.

So sites like Vimeo will always be an option where original high quality content can be broadcast. 2 videos immediately spring to mind :

The "I'm not sick but I'm not well" college video (seriously hot girl at start!)
The dance with random people around the world video...

Both awesome quality original content, and for those... vimeo > youtube.

you genius. i have been searching for this video for freaking ages, posted a few times in youtube thread for it but never found it as could never remember the name so thankyou for posting it, and yes the girl is seriously seriously hot at the start

One thing you will learn as you progress through your career as a Graphic Designer is that 90% of people don't care about good design. They might 'like it when they see it' but it's very difficult to convince them to to take their first steps towards it in the first place.

Even if they do approach you to design work, they often believe that they know more than you and will dismiss your professional opinion. The biggest challenge you will face as a design (assuming you are any good) is not the work itself but the client.
