Is this a good OC?

I don't think it's the lack of fans being the problem, I have 7 x 120mm fans and 1 x 80mm fan, plus the fan in the tuniq and a fan on the BFG VGA, I beleive where I had the PC was stopping the fans doing their job and the air wasn't escaping the case.

or more extreme, get something lapped
-> what does that mean?

This is unlikely, as it seems it wasn't getting fresh air, but the surfaces might not be flat. Lapping is sandpapering to make flatter.

No need though, looks like you've sorted it. What are orthos load temps with fresh air?

I've been running orthos for 1hr 50mins now and it is fluctuating between 50-54c I see it hit 55c a few times I haven't watched it the whole time, but did fot the first half hour and it seems its max temp now is 55c

it seems to be 52-54 mainly, my room is pretty cool as heating has gone off and Ai-booster shows 29-30c system temp.

I definately think fresh air was the main problem.

at this rate I should successfully squeeze a bit more out of yet :D

Well I've spent 2 days playing with settings to find the best 'stable' OC.

It's not that impressive I guess, but I can't seem to push it much more, I tried to clock 4ghz but it kept failing to boot, I even pushed the vcore to 1.512 and didn't dare try any more!

I think i've found the best for a decent voltage, without having to start ramping up the juice or extra volting to memory.

So I have 3.5ghz on vcore 1.4 in bios memory 2.3v (which is stock)

I am running memory @ 1050mhz 4-4-4-10-20 and temps on load @54/58 with Orthos running Blend Test.

Here is my screen shot...

Does anyone have an suggestions, input on if this is ok or if i'm airing to cautious, could I change anything?

all input appreciated.

Return the 6700 and buy a 6600, cheaper

No I hear ya, I see people here getting 3ghz out of a e6300, I aint pushing much more and I've got a big head start on them @ 2.66, I nearly got a e6600 and then decided nah I'll spend the extra , I can afford it , but I'm not sure it was worth it!

Yeah the memory is pretty sweet though I can't hit the boasted 1200mhz with them, and that would only mean fsb 300 X 10 (3ghz cpu)

I've tried 5-5-5-15 as the SPD shows for pc8500 operation but it won't boot, I'm reluctant to give them more juice as the bios only allow increments of .05v and that seems steep compared to .025 steps for vcore

I have them on max stock setting 2.3v , maybe slacking timmings might help.

What's best slower CPU with faster memory but slacker timings, of faster CPU with slower memory and tighter timings? or is the current settings a good compromise? is it really worth trying to push 1200mhz out of them?

I guess I need to benchmark each setting and see which performs best. whats the best benchmarking tool to use 3DMark ?

What would you do?

as for price i am lucky I bought them through my parents company so didn't pay VAT so they were only £258 inc postage. :D

Yeah I see what you're saying. It's still a damn good overclock, certainly better than most. Like you say, the extra cash spent on the 6700 over the 6600 might not have made a lot of difference.

Do you know what chips the Xtreem are? They might love some extra volts, you could give them a fair bit more I expect, 2.5 maybe? Don't know how high mem volts can go. You'll want a little fan blowing on them though to keep them cool.

Faster CPU is the priority. Mem makes far less difference. Maximise CPU, even if it means sticking the mem on a lower divider.

the Xtreem are Micron D9GMH Chips which is why I got them :D

their website says this
Available in 1GB and 2GB Dual Channel
PC2-6400 800MHz 3-3-3-8
64x8 DDR2 FBGA Chips
240pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
Aluminum Heat-spreader
6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
Retail Package
2.2V - 2.35V
Lifetime Warranty

so they will go another 0.5 on stock, but thier heat spreader is pretty poor so would need to cool them. I got an OCZ memory cooler but it wont fit  damn that 8800gtx is huge

i did try to boot @ 4ghz with lower memory than 800mhz but still no joy, got some wierd intel error msg @ post hmmm.

don't think this baby will go much further!!
