I have seen an Ati Radeon 4870 graphics card in a NO COMPETITORS for £60, it has a 12 month warranty that covers normal faults like a standard warranty does when you but it from a normal shop, I have been looking at reviews for them and i do seem impressed, it requires 2 75watt 6pin pci-e power connectors with my psu has got :)

Just wondering if any of you guys have had experience with one of these card? Would you recommend it? I'm not wanting to play all the latest games but for Video and Photoshop work.

Hey, Ryanfitton It actually depends, Cause there are other versions available for that card such as 1GB models and the 2GB model, If you give an more depth specification then it will be easier to compare.

I've just seen the card that you mentioned, It's a 512MB of RAM, which isn't much at all considering you want to use photoshop. I recommend buying a brand new card for the price you are paying too. I suggest you buying a 8800GT which has very good performance for games and the software that you are wanting to use it on. However you can buy the 4870 the 1GB model which is a very decent card indeed. Obviously it'll give better performance than the 8800GT, But your also considering the price at the cost. It's entirely up to you to decide but I'm just giving an over view of the product. Good luck anyways.

Why on earth is 512MB not enough for Photoshop? It's a frame buffer - nothing more. 16Mb is more than enough for 1920x1200.

4870 would be fine, it's overkill IMO.

Well this 4870 card I am wanting is Made by ATI themselves and not a 3rd party company which just use a an ATI chip in them :/

I think i will go for the ATI card considering it is only £60 :) and i still get a 12 month warranty on it, i was just wanting to know whether you would have recommended it, because i've never had a dedicated graphics card before, but now i'm at college doing a photography course i really do need the extra power, and it's got to be better than my on-board graphics chip on my motherboard :)

I would take the competitor name out if I were you :-)

4870 is still a good card, most systems will be able to handle its 2D power requirements.

To be honest Photoshop won't perform noticeably better on a dedicated card than integrated graphics. You'll notice some benefits in video editing and some effects will be offloaded from your CPU to the graphics card.

The 4870 is essentially a gaming card. In graphics use I doubt you would notice any difference between a 4350 and a 4870.

As above, you won't notice any difference as these are performance 3D cards, so you'll only notice a difference in CAD, games, etc. Any desktop work can be done on an integrated card or very basic discrete card.

Okay I take all your advice on board. I will want to play the occasional game, and like I've said a computer with a dedicated card has to be better than on which doesn't have on :)

I didn't read the part, which mentions that he'll be using the card for photographing. I was thinking of using photoshop to it's full use, which obviously the 3D side of photoshop. I misunderstood you, Sorry about that.
