Is this a good overclocking video?

I was thinking of overclocking my FX 8320 using Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 motherboard with 8gb 1600MHz and Thermalright True Spirit 90 CPU Cooler

I would like to get at least 4.2 GHz without messing with voltages.

Is this a good video guide to follow? Bare in mind this is my 1st ever attempt at overclocking.

Thanks for your time

To overclock just change the multiplier on your motherboard. It's commonly referred to as "CPU multiplier" or "CPU Ratio". It should be about 21.0 for 4.2GHz on a Piledriver (at least for my Sabertooth board). Save your settings and your done :)

At this point you just need to check if it's stable by running Prime95 for a few hours and to monitor temperatures with software such as HWmonitor.

Overclocking can be very simple, especially when you don't want to change the voltages. In my experience any modern Intel overclock guide will be very similar to a AMD FX CPU. The things you need to change will be pretty much the same and just maybe named differently in the BIOs.

As for the guide you posted, its pretty much correct :)

The video has the basic point - you increase the FSB or multiplier until it stops being stable, then you look at increasing the voltage (or other settings) to get it up further. A gentle overclock - less than 4.3GHz - should be very easy.

8 pack is posting an FX overclocking guide soon.

Can I do the cpu ratio thing whilst keeping everything else auto or do I have to unauto things and revert things back to stock if changing the cpu ratio changes them? I'm just not sure what to turn off/manual

You can load optimised defaults to reset everything.

Most things can be left on auto besides the multiplier. The LLC setting will probably need to be raised after anything but a small overclock as otherwise under load the voltage will drop too low and you'll get a BSOD.

If you found that increasing the ratio by 1 was fine and everything was stable, you could increase it again by 1 without changing the other settings.
