Sorry to start a thread like this, but I was on Dell's website.

One their top of the range system (dell, not alienware though :p) it comes with a i3 540 as standard. To upgrade to a i7 870, which costs £250 on ocuk, it costs £430 change it. WTF

I feel sorry for people who buy this stuff. How can dell have such ridiculously huge mark ups and have people fall for it? This really annoys me.

ps: I hope it doesn't count as advertising competitors, I don't think people would buy after reading this tbh

sounds pretty standard tbh, the prices for memory upgrades are a joke too...

people just pay for the badge i guess

If only people showed a little interest into learning about the workings of PCs, they would soon realise you can save £££. Unless you get hook and ended up spending even more...

It's more than double the price. If it was £430 for the upgrade, then the initial i3 540 must have been at least £100. That means that to get an 870, you fork out £530, more than twice what the chip costs!

All about the advertising. Makes me sick watching people buy stuff in PC world from the idiots that don't know what they are talking about apart from what they had to learn from the work sheet.

Not everyone is computer savvy so they can charge a premium on everything and get away with it. Like with most PC shops and retailers that sell PC stuff. People like us that know better, simply shop elsewhere.

Yeah, I think the last time I was in PC World, I almost died inside a little. Even hearing advice about laptop upgrades made me lol - apparently 8GB RAM "should" be enough for doing work in Office and Web Browsing!

Well, businesses would buy it. Can't imagine an organisation buying 200 PCs and then ordering 200 spare cpus to replace each one.

Obviously, it's a business and they operate to make money. That's very understandable, but putting such huge markups and giving crap advice to customers is unacceptable to be honest.

Might become a little slow if you start playing solitaire as well, though.

Call me wrong but doesnt going from an i3 to an i7 require a brand new motherboard so your not just paying for the chip but the motherboard as well

i have to admit though you cant build a basic system for what you can buy one out of the likes of pc world or dell.

believe me i tried when i was looking for a starter rig for my kids last year my daughter got a 300 quid advent out of the purple place and my boy got a similar setup this year i simply couldnt build a complete system for less than they could supply one with a hassle free warranty and ready to go.

and yes i died a lot inside both at the time of purchase and admitting that the now :(

Yes, but at the low end, you won't be doing a lot of 'upgrading' while choosing the pc. When you start getting into mid range specs, say £600 upwards, that's when they hit you

rip off , bet they need to switch the psu aswell though seeing as dell use the bare minimum

Just had a little read of that. Thanks, that's really helpful. I can't believe that people would be paying TWICE as much. I had no idea of that until now. before I thought it was around 40-50% extra
