Is this a nice gaming PC spec?

just to throw a spanner in the works

i suggest getting a monitor with a lower responce time,
as this is better for games.

that Benq you all like may have great picture quality
but it lacks pace with a 5ms responce time. slowsy slowsy

i suggest this 2ms monitor

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-048-IY&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=

its native resolution is 1920x1080 which will be more than enuff
for your nephew to get sucked into th game. and it not being any higher
should help your GPU cope a lot more.

or for a £7 more you can get better contrast and a more known Brand :)

hope this helps

Edited: sorry i posted the wrong link for 2nd monitor :)

@koolpc

hey m8, dont know if you caught my post just before you posted that.

that monitor you have selected has pretty low contrast and a slow
responce time (5ms) in gaming standards. you want 2ms

seeing as your under your £900 budget i suggest you invest the spare cash
in 1 of these 2 options

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-117-SA&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-048-IY&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=

better contrast and most important a far faster responce time
which makes the difference in games.

its up to you m8. :)

Already changed monitor in post 39 mate and that has 2ms.

How is the graphics card too pricey if it comes within budget? It will perform a lot better in games and will not be needing an upgrade as soon as the 4890 nor 5770 for the person crazy about gaming.....

WD blue is 7200rpm and 16MB cache so does the sammy... is it faster?

What about this for the case?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-214-CM&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

Like everything else, there is always something better and also cost more!! I think a 4890 will suffice as it will play any game he throws at it.

As for Sammy drive, everyone knows it is a stonking drive.

and to add to wot im saying above. a good monitor will out last
any of the parts your putting into your machine.

update. ahh yes sorry, you quoted sum1 else. my bad, you know now anyway:)

I know its a good card, i agree but its still £120 for a DX10 card and i thought as you can afford one of the best bang for buck graphics cards out but looks like you have your mind set on the hot power hungry 4890 then....shame ;)

And yeh for the sammy its only an extra £4 so defo worth it :D

it has 2ms which is good but contrast is 5000:1 pretty low and its not
gonna show you the GPU's full potential which is wot u want.
its like having a F1 car on square wheels? lol

you looking at least 20,000:1

good luck with build m8;)

this is my very first build post for sum1.
feel free to rip it to shreads but though id give it a go.:D

its over budget by £79 so that 1 red X already

i went for a better monitor because as i said it will outlast
any hardware. i chose the palit 460 cuz the giga is out of stock.
that board has been recommended a lot and the venom cpu cooler
would do if he upgrades to a phenom II in the future

the £79 gets a futureproof monitor and a bit of headroom for upgrades.

yay or nay?
be gentle:p

Edit: lol it looks really small and cant read for me. same for every1? ahh well gav it a go

Not a bad stab jake.....see how difficult this shizz is helping out other people. One thing doing your own quite different for others isn't it lol (Hope your build is coming along btw)

That infamous mobo you spec'd (you know why lol) isnt necessary unless you choose an ati card and want xfire. If kool is 100% sure he wont dual card then he may as well go for a "budget" mATX mobo with one 16X PCI-EX lane. Take the £40-50 odd quid saved from there and stick it in the gfx card budget (aiming for the nvidia 460 as a single card it has best bang for buck). The aftermarket cooler isnt really necessary in this build so thats nearly £40 saved. Those two lil changes would probably put the build bang on budget....the OP did say not a £1 over ;p

I'm not recommending the 4890 as it will "expire" far more quickly than a 5830 will as it's directx10 only. What it does show is how much these monster cards depreciate in price over time but still have some "umph" in them.

In my opinion kool you have two options. Drop the spec of the mobo and you should be able to get a nvidia 460. Or stick with your original spec (with the HDD and RAM changes stu and I suggested) and embrace the option of xfire. Two 5770s (second one bought much later and cheaper) equal a 5870 (sometimes pip it) or try and find a 5830 within budget knowing it can be xfired with another 5800 series card once they lose their value (preferably the 5870).

Is this build needed asap? Can you not hold off a lil while and see what these new ati cards will bring to the table? Talking it out is always good, these are our opinions i just hope they help more than confuse ;p

Come on guys - lets do this properly!:) If gaming is the main use we all know GPU is absolute king when it comes to performance, so build around the best you can get (provided you don't bottleneck it).

Spec coming...

OK here we go...

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5870 PCS+ "CODMW2 Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £111.61
OcUK Cream 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black £108.09
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £82.99
Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMD4GX3M2A1600C9) £79.89
OCZ StealthXStream 2 600W Power Supply £52.98
Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H 760G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £51.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £32.99
Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower Case - Black £26.99
Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse (910-000616) £22.99
Saitek Cyborg V1 Gaming Keyboard £18.99
OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £12.98
Sub Total : £902.49

Yup, that's right - a 5870! But note we still have a Phenom II 955 and 1600MHz ram. This will utterly p**s on anything else suggested so far. Nothing else is cheap rubbish either. I personally have that case and it's incredible for the money. OK he doesnt have his side window, but does he want to play games at their best or look at PCBs? It's £2.49 over budget, but you can probably find that down the sofa :)

That is an extreme example of what's possible with the spending geared towards gaming performance (and I would choose that spec in a heartbeat myself as for me performance is everything). However, you could always move down to 470 or 5850, which would still own 460/5770 and then have plenty spare to upgrade the other items, or add an aftermarket cooler for overclocking.

Keep thinking I must have forgotten something, but hopefully I haven't! The small savings where it doesn't really matter all add up, and this uses a lot of This Week Only special offers.
