The reason for this is that they use ready made eCommerce systems from different vendors, pre-tailored to things like photos and travel. So to avoid technical/software conflicts between so many systems, and possibly to retain vendor support, and possibly to contain security breaches, they need to host each on separate domains.

If only reverse proxies and load balancers existed, then they would be able to host it all on one domain

Yeah.

In the case of Asda, and other large corps with the ability to form big contracts, these eCommerce systems are fully outsourced to and run by the third party.

Asda gifts is just a front for http://www.buyagift.co.uk/ They are licenced to use the Asda brand, but buyagift needs to physically operate and be responsible for that entity. I'm sure the contract between Asda and buyagift is very detailed, there must be a reason they needed an entirely separate domain, and it may not mainly be a technical reason.
