I'd grateful if you folks would give me a sanity check on this lot:

- drives, keyboard, mouse, 1920x1200 monitor, to be transferred from old PC
- Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
- Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)
- Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
- Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)
- Asus GeForce EN8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
- Tuniq Tower 120-LFB CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
- RAM, um, need some help here.

It's meant mostly as a video processing machine with some gaming on the side. I will overclock, without going berserk (stability is important when you run four day video jobs).

I chose a Gigabyte mobo because I want coaxial S/PDIF sockets (most have optical), and the DS3R specifically for the 8 SATA connectors (I own six SATA drives and counting). I picked the PSU/CPU/cooling because they seem wildly popular around here. I think the 8800GT will do me, I'm not an ubergamer (my current 1950Pro would be fine if I hadn't bought the big monitor).

Any advice on the RAM would be appreciated...

nice system

you could get the 520 corasir and that would be plenty for that setup

OK, thanks.

If I thought it was possible that I might end up with a 9800GTX or similar down the line, would the 620 be good insurance? Or is it OTT?

if it is mainly for video then i would reccommend an ati 3870 XT

I prefer to do pure software decoding on the CPU and not be tied into certain playback software that drives GPUs. You get better control, more post-processing options etc. The C2Q should take it in its stride (my A64 X2 3800+ is close).

WOW!!!!!!!!

We will have basically the same rig if you choose them components.........im just not sure the DS3R(board i was gonna get) has enough cpu fan ports for the antec case. ;)

Gonna have to power them on PSU
