Is this a stupid idea?

I currently have a 2 year old 939 A64 3700 + ATI X800 system on an ATX board that I think may be the cause of a few problems I'm having. At some point I'm going to have to invest in a brand spanking new C2D system, but I'm going through ideas for what to do with my old setup.

One of the ideas I'm toying with is putting it into a shuttle. Now with the research I've done 939 shuttles aren't that easy to get, and ones that will fit a double width graphics card are even harder.

Now, the stupid idea. As the PCI-E slot is on the outside on some shuttles, would I be able to get my card working in a shuttle if i modded the case to fit the cooler so it stuck out the side?

Go on, don't hold back, tell me why this would quite clearly never work!

Cheers,

do you mean mod the case so that the case becomes part of the heatsink, or do you mean cut a hole in the case so that the cooler isn't restricted by the case?

If it's the latter, no problem at all, infact, it's been done before... quite a few times.

EDIT: post 176 on the new cases thread:

Cheers, thats pretty much spot on what I was thinking about. So it can be done, hmm, certainly food for thought... <strokes imaginary beard>
