Is this a stupid idea?

Extremes are fantastic coolers-coming from someone who has used them in single/CrossFire modes.

It won't get much quieter than that on air, even when gaming flat out they are still exceptionally quiet and sorely missing them now I have moved onto a 7970, it can't be heard @Idle, on stock it's surprisingly quiet, but it's terrible if you clock the card.

But, before you jump out and buy one, it's massive, about 31cm(if memory serves), and have you tried a custom fan profile in AB or with using Riva tuner?

You can try and set it so that it's spinning the lowest it can possibly go@idle bearing in mind it still needs to keep the gpu cool while fast enough to prevent the fans from stalling.

Size won't be an issue as the one on the card already is pretty massive as it is.

I have the card set to 30 percent in afterburner which is the lowest it will go, setting to say 20 percent in custom fan profile doesn't make it drop. The cooler is great, and stays at 30 percent fan under full load with temps in the mid 40's. Do you think the arctic xtreme III could match that?

Why on earth do you want temps lower than mid 40's?

I'm going for as quiet as possible pc so its annoying me a bit

It's not temps, it's noise levels.

You may lose the top hdd cage in your case:

'Graphics cards up to 295mm in length with the top HDD cage installed
With the top cage removed, graphics cards up to 430mm in length may be installed'

The cooler on it's own is 29cm, mounted, it's longer, just so you are aware.

Try other programs for the fan speed, it may very well be a 30% minimum, but Trixx can slow down my fan slower than AB can.

Evga/His/Trixx and Riva tuner are all free to try first.;)

Whether the AC can match the temps could only be found by trying it I'm afraid unless someone can tell you through use.

I imagine it should match it on the core at least, but whether the ichill fans specifically direct more air over the vrm's is anyone's guess again unless its been tried and tested.

I would also find out if the AC can directly connect to your gpu header(it does with AMD, but the last time I tried with Nvidia it was a different fitting) as you would then need to find a cable like a 'Gelid PWM Adapater Cable for VGA Cooler Fans' too, or you would have to manually set a speed with the supplied set speeds

There is also the Ac A2 as well to consider, much cheaper and closer to the size of your gpu too I think.

Yep, I want lower noise, but still hoping temps would be the same :D The arctic has 3 92mm fans whereas the ichill has 1 92mm and 2 80mm.

Already have the top cage removed for better airflow so no problem with its size. I'd say they are similar though as the ichill already extends a lot past the 680 pcb.

On auto(again remeber it's plugged straight into the board on AMD), they spin soo slow@idle:

Having recently tried a 7970 WindForce a 7950 His Ice-Q, and loads of other custom coolers previously, I'm guessing that the AC is going to be quieter at stock as it's quieter than every other cooler I have ever used.

Again they are huge, I don't know what length your gpu is in comparison, but thats' on 6950>70's which are the same length as reference 7970's sitting in a P280.

(they had a divorce and went their separate ways:()

In the above, when all the case fans are switched off and the 920 is set to 'silent', you couldn't hear the AC's@idle at all, it's that quiet.

As your temps are so low, I think you can afford them to go up some what as a trade off if noise is your main aim.

If ~£50 is affordable to you and you want to play about(with the possibility of voiding your warranty) with your gpu, then give it a try, if it doesn't work out, throw it in the MM, take a hit and man up.:D

Okay, pretty sure I'll get one (its 45 pounds btw. the xtreme III ). Can't seem to find it on ocuk.

I won't have to use any of the ram heatsinks as the ichill always has a plate over them so if I'm not happy with it I can always sell it. I might have second thoughts about messing around with my new card though once it arrives :D

Btw I lied a bit in op, I haven't got the noctua cooler yet, the one I'm looking at is the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 as its meant to be a bit quieter than the dh 14. Any other recommendations? Was considering one of the thermalright ones as well (archon, macho hr 02 or true spirit 140)
