Sorry to start another spec thread!

Havent built a pc since socket a was about.

Ive spec'ed this for a good gaming machine is it all ok?

I want something i can put together easily with no tweaking needed or oc'ing

Gigabyte GZ-X2 Black Midi Case No PSU £28.99

OCZ StealthXStream 500w Silent ATX2 Power Supply £36.99

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Retail / OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 Motherboard / 2GB OCZ PC-8500 Dual Channel DDR2 Kit - Bundle £220.97

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM £192.99

Pioneer BDC-202BK 5x BD-ROM + 12x12 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) - OEM £74.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3250410AS) £38.99

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00715)

Is it all good, trying to keep below £800 quid!

Thanks for any advice on other componants that are better but in the same price range.

Best Regards to all

Lee

thanks for the input

It only included that ram as it was in the bundle!

Can you recommend a more suitable 2gb ram for me and I'll price the parts seperatly.

Also does that psu support e-atx? I heard the board needs it?

Will this setup play the latest games on medium settings?

Thanks for the help it is much appreciated!

commiting a faux pas here by replying to myself but is this stuff ok for that?

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC

Would I also be better going to a 3ghz processor? Conroe or wolfdale better?

What's the difference?

I'm so sorry guys feel a right pratt for letting myself slip so far out of the scene,

Last pc I built was:

Sempron 2800 @ 2ghz
DDR 400 ram 1.5gb
Ati x850xt agp card

Things move so fast so I'm sorry to lumber you all with my lack of knowledge!

Sorry, had no access in the afternoon at work. That Ram is absolutely fine for the system. Wolfdales are the better cores, particularly if overclocking (and the E6750 isn't great for that apparantly) but they do command a price premium at the moment so it is up to you to decide if you are willing to pay the extra.

The PSU is suitable for that system it will have all required connections.

Don't worry for a second about asking questions, it is a lot easier and better to sort potential problems now rather than after the purchase. :)

thanks mate

The one thing that has confused me with new tech is the FSb speeds

Think the wolfdale is 1333mhz so if the ram is 800mhz will it hold the cpu back?

I was just fine and dandy with the 166/333 of days gone by!!

Hi mate,

everything looks good and yes the suggested 2gb ram looks like a better option.

as for eatx im not totally sure what you mean (never had to worry about it).

And dont worry about that setup running the latest games. Im pretty sure it will keep up for a long time. For now you will be able to run pretty much every game at max which is out. cod4, tf2 and the rest, you name it and you can run it. im very tempted at the price of the video card. i like to see it has come down in price from the last time i looked at it :) only one game you might have any trouble playing max is crysis but im sure you can still run it on high and maintain a very good framerate.

It confuses quite a few people so you aren't alone. Essentially the Core2Duo/Quads are 'quad-pumped' on the FSB so for a Wolfdale running at 1333mhz you need Ram capable of 333mhz (PC5300 speed which runs at a nominal 667mhz hence the DDR2 part). PC6400 is guaranteed to run at a minimum of 400mhz (and many run higher) so using the E8400 as an example which has a 9x multiplier then you would get 3.6ghz just by running the Ram at its rated speed.

This is well within the capabilities of the chip and counts as a pretty mild overclock for the Wolfdales, if you wanted to take it further then PC8000 or above starts to make sense but you may get lucky with the PC6400 anyway.

Hopefully this makes sense but if not just say and I'll try again. :)

think ive grasped it mate cheers,

so ill stick to the 6400 as i dont think ill even push the cpu to 3.6

My other concern was reading that the motherboard ive picked uses an 8 pin connector and not the usual 4 pin p4 one.

Ive read it will fit in the plug but can melt if it pulls too much through the 4 wires as opposed to the 8 its made for,

Alternatively any good mother boards that will fit into this spec around the same price?

So far we have:

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £29.99

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail £149.99

Gigabyte GZ-X2 Black Midi Case No PSU £28.99

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM £192.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3250410AS) £38.99

Akasa Ultra Quiet 500W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU - Black Nickel £44.99

Pioneer BDC-202BK 5x BD-ROM + 12x12 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) - OEM £74.99

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00715) £59.99

Thats about £740 including vat and shipping so have about £60 inc vat to play with give or take 20 quid.

Any suggestions on the mobo then?

(note have upped the psu for one with an 8 pin output!)

Thanks

Lee

ok now im being a pain,

How does the processor i chose:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

compare to :

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Bear in mind im not clocking it and ill be playing games mostly

just looking for the best load times and boot up in vista etc

Lee

(no more questions i hope!)

If you are just going for pure speed then the Wolfdale will be quicker (obviously apart from applications that take full advantage of quad cores), it does cost a bit more but it is the faster of the two. For most gaming you still don't need quad core as very few games utilise it to the utmost yet.

Since you've changed the PSU I see no reason to change from the original motherboard really but if you want to then Gigabyte do a few suitable models (P35 DS3R or the cheaper but less fully featured P31 DS3L), Abit are also worth a look with the IP35-E or Asus with the P5K SE. All will be much of a muchness in performance terms, take a look at the features though as some don't come with firewire or have fewer USB2.0 ports than others etc.

as you probably wont upgrade again for a while it may make more sense to go for the quad core q6600 over the e8400 for "futureproofing" against games once they do start to utilise multiple cores properly.
