isnt that an older model, judging by the HD READY only spec, I thought all new sony 40" were FULL HD.

if its for £500 or less yes its worth it, but if its £700 or over you are in Panasonic Plasma territory which will beet this set hands down.

its around £500 - £600 i did want a sammy but 750+ is way to much for me

HD Ready is till 100% fine though ?

for a 40" set yes, a Full HD set would look better with a 1080p signal feeding through it, but unless you got pretty close you not losing much. all depends on how close your gonna be sat to it.

although for £650 you can get a 42" samsung plasma and for £700 a Panasonic plasma

hmm the TV will be wall mounted , its 2 half ft away from where the computer is ... and about 12 half ft to my door

so am i really that better off getting a full HD TV then ?

for your budget you will struggle to get a decent full HD set, I would rather have a nice HD ready set then a cheap Full HD.

Its like digital cameras, a decent 3mp will take far nice pictures then a cheepo 7mp one.

doing to sound really spaffy , but whats the diffrence between HD Ready + HD set ? picture quallity?

my current tv is about 14-16yrs :P so ive not got in to the whole new TV thing

quite tempted to go higher and get a new sammy

it all depends on what signal you are feeding it, if your just watching TV or Sky, then some Full HD sets can actually look worse. But feed it a 1080P signal (Blu Ray or HD DVD) and you will see the extra clarity.

Just dont be suckered in by the specs, you can get some truly nasty sets that have the Full HD specs (1920x1080 is full hd, i think hd ready is 1024x720, just think of it as upping the resolution on your TV)

The best advice I an give is go and look at them before you buy, you will probably be spending a fair bit of time saat in front of whatever you buy, so its worth stretching your budget and doing your homework to make sure that every time you look at it your dissapointed.

Over the 2 sets you want (Sony & Samsung) I would say save for the Samsung

i was always lead to believe LCD was better than plasma. or is just the panasonic plasmas?

U series, made by Beko in Turkey. Its not really a Sony set and lacks the Bravia engine, its only got bravia on the sound.

Plasma has darker blacks, better contrast ratios (without resorting to dynamic backlight trickery), richer colours, and less motion blur.

Cheaper plasma's are often slightly lower resolution 1024x768 instead of 1366x768, but higher end sets are now 1920x1080 in both plasma and lcd TV's so that difference is being phased out now.

LCD's main advantage is that its bascially unburnable, while plasma's can still be damaged if you leave static images on them for too long... but even there plasma's a lot better than it used to be.

For general use Plasma wins hands down, with LCD a distant second. For gaming LCD is marginally ahead due to the burn issue. But many people game on their plasma's without any problem.

Agreed. I use my 360 on our Pana plasma without issue. If you are going to be hooking up any SD sources ie regular sky tv then a plasma murders LCD in picture quality.

I game on my 360 for hours on end, and never had any screen burn, every now and again you may get a slight bit of screen retention, but just flick channels and its gone in seconds, modern plasmas are a lot more resiliant.

As for the whole LCD Vs Plasma, I had an LCD before my plasma, it was a good one to, Panasonic TX32, cost me a grand at the time, and whilst it looked really nice with HD, Freeview could look a bit iffy. The main reason for switching was black levels, Iv yet to see a LCD with decent black levels, dark films can just become a right old pain to watch, where as with a decent plasma you get nice deep blacks with plenty of detail in the dark areas. trust me, it makes a huge differance.

Dont take my word for it though, go and take a look and see what you prefer.
