Is this Astra a bit overpriced?

Hi, just going to look at a few cars this coming week as my first car around the £3k mark. Astra, Leon, Focus and Mondeo - 99/00 roughly.

I have really taken a liking to this:

But when I look on Parker's, the car now looks horribly overpriced (http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/Valuation.aspx?deriv=16104&plate=60&buysell=buy) compared to Whatcar (http://www.whatcar.co.uk/valuation-summary.aspx?MA=2&MV=23469&ED=3744&UP=1682576&ML=76000) (mind you the latter is a 2001 version, could not get a 1999 one valued.)

Other interests:

Much cheaper modeo: http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/ww...category=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200731292388870

I am reluctant to venture a lot further from Hants/Surrey/Berks as I have to get my dad to drive and accompany me, hence most are local. Any advice very much welcome.

Yep thats definetly overpriced IMO. In January this year I payed that for a mint condition 2000 'W' 1.8 sxi with full service history, T&T, and with only 30,000 miles on it. Fair enough that ones got the Irmscher kit on it be even so I would pay that for it.

I recently changed from a Mondeo 1.8 to an Astra 1.6i due to the fact that my girlfriend found the Mondeo a bit too big and cumbersome to drive.

My Astra is a little bid modified - lowered suspension, uprated shocks and irmischer exhaust and seems a bit quicker than the Mondeo even though it has a smaller engine.

In my opinion, the Mondeo has more going for it in terms of cabin space and comfort, it also seemed slightly more suited to long motorway journeys than the Astra.

The bodywork on the Astra seems better quality than on a Mondeo, as does the internal trim.

They are too great cars, Mondeos generally seem to go for a lot less than Astras - you can pick up a mint V Plate mondeo for £1200-£1600 quite easily.

Thanks, that's useful. What would be a reasonable price for it then? I didn't realise that was an Irmsher kit; it looked like the Sri body or a factory fitted one.

Wrt the Mondeo, I agree. Much cheaper but it just doesn't quite grab me as that particular Astra. It is much bigger too. I only plan on driving to the train station everyday and the odd motorway journeys, say once a couple of weeks.

I have been mostly driving my mum's 1.2 97 Clio so far, and a brief spell in my dad's 98 1.8 Vectra for 2 months last summer.

No probs. Not sure on price tbh, just had a quick look about and there does seem to be a few of that kind of age and value  Either I got a bargin with mine or some people are being abit optimistic on their prices!

Yeh it was a factory option, just Irmscher does the styling for Vauxhall.

I really cant help on cost, or anything in the thread apart form saying my god that bodykit on the first Astra is completely horrid. Eeeeeeew :(

My money would be on that 02 Focus for £3550

Ive owned 2 focus's theyre great cars. 2nd time round I had upto 7 grand to spend and tbh I never even looked at Astras, Just Focus's, Drove a Leon 1.6 but decided it wasnt really an upgrade.

Yes, that is my 2nd choice actually, depending on how much I can knock off either cars. The Focus is 3 years newer with a lot more inside I think. But I ideally want to stick at £3k so I'll have a think tomorrow when I go see them.

Only way really, drive both see which you prefer, You gotta live with it no matter what reviews say

Very true. All the reviews say that the Focus is a better car, however having driving both and being a passenger in my mates focus quite a few times, I prefer the Astra over the focus any day.

BTW, any reason your looking at the 1.6's?? Just I know that the Astra 1.8's can be had for more or less the same price, is a quicker engine that'll return almost the same mpg, and to finish it of the insurance for me was only soemthing like £20 difference. For me it was a no brainer to get the 1.8 over the 1.6.

The blue 5 door is too overpriced, there selling for around 2200-2500 round here. You can probs pick up a decent Astra/Focus at auction for £1800
