I bought this athlon xp through the MM ages ago as an update to my shuttle. I was very busy when it came and just opened it, noticed that it was quite 'dirty' but didn't look too closely. Later I checked it and found that not only was it covered in gunk but the edges of the cpu itself are chipped. I know they were prone to this if people didn't take care with the heatsinks and it could kill the chip but I am not sure how bad this is. I don't want to go through the hassle of installing it to find it doesn't work or is unreliable.

My shuttle currently has a sempron 2200 in it so this wouldn't be a huge upgrade but the extra cache should make a bit of difference. I know it is pretty old now but I won't be upgrading the whole thing for a while and it runs reliably at the moment.

Are the chips on this bad enough to effect the operation of the cpu and if I installed it and it appeared to run, how could I check that it is ok, or is it just a case of it either runs or it doesn't?

Thanks for the replies. What would be a good stress program to test it with? Will these programs test all of the chip's functionality - I don't want to think it is ok and then find it has problems with certain things like amonlym.
