Hello all

i've been out of the pc loop for a few years now, so sorry if this is a recurring question.

my pc is gettin on a bit now, athlon 64 3200
1 gb ram and it did have a 6800gt (AGP) untill it decided to break.

i dont do much gaming any more, however i would still like the option to play the games i've got and would'nt mind playing the new half-life when it comes out and possibly bio shock.

i've seen this graphics card for under £50 and im just wondering if its any good, how it compares to my 6800gt, is it better or worse, or pretty much the same.
i dont want to spend loads as like i said i dont have the time for gaming any more.

the card in question is the
Inno3D GeForce 7600GS 256MB DDR3

thanks

What about the X1950 pro?. It's double the price but a little more than double the power with much better image quality than the 7600GS you have seen.

If your PSU can handle 26Amps on the 12v rail then you wouldn't need to upgrade that. If you do have to upgrade the PSU then I'd just forget about it and get something else. I don't know how much faster the 7600GS is over the 6800GT but I don't think it's a worthy upgrade although I may be wrong.

I'd definitely consider the X1950pro though as it's the best available AGP card out IMO. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-137-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=403

thanks for your help guys, i was'nt really looking for a massive increase in proformance, i was just after some thing thats equal to or better than my 6800gt and low in price. How does the HIS ATI Radeon X1650 Pro compare to a 6800gt?

also is moving from a nvidia card to a ATI card a simple job of fitting it then removing just the nvidia display drivers with some thing like driver cleaner pro then installing the new drivers, or is it more involved.

thanks again.

x1650pro's are pretty poor, the x1650 XT's are better, slightly faster than the 7600 GT, which is faster than the old 6800 Ultra, so id go for the XT if you don't want the x1950pro.

Yeah its as easy as that changing cards, just remove the drivers from Add/Remove, switch off, swap cards, boot up in safe mode, run driver cleaner pro, boot normally, install new drivers.

thanks, will probably save for a bit longer and get either a XT or x1950pro.

one other thing, my psu is a non branded 400w cheap as chips affair, will this be up to the job of running it.
thanks

still weighting up my options, not sure if i can justify spending over £100 when i dont play games any more.

also could'nt find any info on my psu, i doubt it will handle a 1950 pro.

new question
which is the better card out of these two.

Leadtek GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (AGP)

or

HIS ATI Radeon X1650 Pro 512MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (AGP)

thanks for all your help guys.

just found some specs on the psu.

Inno3D 7600GS with DDR3? Are you sure you're dont mean the Inno 7600GST as that has DDR3 whereas the GS is DDR2.
I have the GST in one of my systems, it's as good as a 7600GT ie within 3 to 5fps of it in all the standard gaming benchmarks. Core is factory set at 500 and the memory at 1400 but will clock a bit more using coolbits. I can't tell the difference in games between the 7600GST and a proper 7600GT. Certainly a much better card than the 6800 you have now.

in my opining i wouldnt get the x1950 pro they are a great card but i think it may be held back a bit by your cpu. i think *** x1650xt is the better option, and save the money over towards a full pc rebuild later

Having re-read your post I now see we're talking AGP so the card you're looking at is the Inno3D 7600gs with DDR2 memory, not DDR3.
I have one of these too with a small o/c :) Because of the crippled DDR2 running at 800mhz default it's probably not better than the 6800 but still plays most new games at lower res with decent fps. Mine runs Colin Mcrae Dirt ok on a 3ghz s478 P4. Halflife isn't that graphically demanding (even the newer episodes) but I doubt you'll get a good experience with Bioshock.
Good review of the Inno3D 7600GS here;
