No its slower but it does have the advantage of having more vram and its a single core gpu which does not rely on sli/cfx profiles.
Its not a great time to be thinking of a new card with amd releasing there new cards in january especially when you still own one of the fastest cards you can buy.

The 5970 will invariably have higher maximum fps but is limited to one gb of vram, minimums and averages will be closer in some games. As mentioned, the 7000 series is out in the not too distant future.
